Angular cheilitis is inflammation of the angles of the mouth.
The cause are varied...common ones being -dryness of the skin there that may get worse with allergies/in certain weathers etc . Also some vitamins like B complex and iron deficiency are also associated with this . Children who are in the habit of biting their nails/thumb sucking have saliva collected at the sides of the mouth and that can cause it too.
Prevention therefore depends on what seems to be the most likely cause for your son.
Keep the angle of the mouth well moisturised with vaseline, ensure a good intake of foods containing B complex and iron like green leafy vegetables etc. Consult your doctor if supplementation via syrups is required.
