Hi my baby is 48 days old and she started breastfeeding very late as I dint have milk till 1week post delivery. She got used to formula and took time for breastfeeding. Now that she started breastfeed I feel that I don't have enough milk supply. Because as soon as she finishes breastfeeding she is still hungry and I have to give her formula feed every time. I am eating all types of foods that help in increasing milk supply but I don't see any result. And apart from this I have sore and dry nipples and I am using nipple shields and sometimes my nipples bleed. I can see left over milk is in brown colour in the nipple shield. Please suggest me what should I do? Is it okay if my baby depends on formula instead of my milk?

Answer:
you need to both relax and take care of diet to help in lactation. Few suggestions are take a balanced diet of cereals (esp dalia, bajra), green leafy vegetables (esp methi, mustard leaves), dals & legumes (masoor. black channa, soybean), fruits, milk products, eggs fish & poultry. Do take almonds, cashew, walnuts, sesame seeds, flaxseeds, dates, raisins, cumin seeds, methi seeds, ajwain, dried ginger, gaund, jaggery etc. You should also take ample fluids in the form of lukewarm water, zeera water, soups, buttermilk, egg nog, milk etc. You may also read a blog for this on our website, link is given https://www.parentune.com/parent-blog/-8-nutrition-tips-for-breastfeeding-mothers/539 If you are lactating sufficiently to meet your child's need, you may not start with any top feed. Otherwise, if there is need to give top feed, you can gradually start with top feed. Start by replacing one of your feeds with top feed. You can start with a lesser amount of 50 ml or so and then gradually increase the amounts according to child's acceptance. Formula milk is made of animal milk only and has added nutrients to match it most closely with breast milk. Some prefer fresh animal milk (do not give cow's milk to a child below one year of age) over formula milk. Packet milk is pasteurised animal milk only which is more hygienically packed and hence safer. You can also read the following blog to help you decide on the type of milk https://www.parentune.com/parent-blog/all-you-wanted-to-know-about-the-milk-intake-of-your-child/619
