Finger or thumb sucking is common among children between the age of 2 years to 7 years. This is a behavioral phenomenon that stops with time. It is usually a result of stress, insecurity, hurt, anxiety and nervousness. To stop your child from finger sucking you may try the following things – try to divert the child’s attention, make them wear gloves, keep their hands engaged by giving them a game or food to eat, tell them that hands and fingers are not always clean and carry germs bacteria which may lead to stomach ache and praise for not sucking.
After permanent teeth come in, sucking may cause problems with the proper growth of the mouth and alignment of the teeth. It can also cause changes in the roof of the mouth.
