Amphetamines can cross the placenta and can affect the developing baby in many ways. Chances of having a small/ growth restricted baby, premature birth, placental haemorrhage , small head circumference of the baby, cleft lip, heart problems, biliary atresia and undescended testes are increased . There have also been reports of the baby being stillborn as well and sudden death of the baby. Babies of addicted mothers can also show withdrawal symptoms for weeks after birth, they can have prolonged crying, agitation, feeding problems, lethargy etc. The proportion of the babies showing these problems is difficult to point accurately. So, such mother's definitely must consult their doctor immediately.
