In a major shake‑up for school admissions, Haryana has officially made it compulsory for children to be at least six years old to get admission into Class 1 starting from the 2026‑27 academic session and all age relaxations have been scrapped. This bold move is expected to affect thousands of families across the state who are planning early school entry for their kids.

What’s the Big Change?

Until now, Haryana allowed some flexibility children around 5 years and 6 months could sometimes get into Class 1. But that’s all changing. Starting next year, no child under six will be eligible for Class 1, whether in government, private, or aided schools.

This means:

·       6 years minimum age is mandatory, no exceptions.

·       Children younger than six will be placed in Balvatika (pre‑primary/Foundation Stage) classes instead.

·       All previous age relaxations have been officially ended.

Why the Age Rule Matters for Child Development

Experts say that children develop critical cognitive, emotional, and social skills between ages 5 and 6. By making six the minimum age for formal schooling, the state aims to ensure that children are ready to learn, focus, and adapt to classroom routines. Early admission at younger ages sometimes leads to stress, learning difficulties, and lack of attention.

Why Did Haryana Make This Change?

According to officials, the new rule aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes a structured learning framework where early childhood education is strengthened before formal schooling begins. Delhi and several other states are also moving toward a six‑year entry age for Class 1 for the same reason.

Another key reason is a recent directive from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which urged the state to bring its rules in line with national guidelines and remove confusing age relaxations from earlier regulations.

What Parents Need To Know

For families planning admission in 2026:

·       If a child is not yet six by the cut‑off date, they cannot enter Class 1.

·       Instead, younger children will continue in age‑appropriate preschool or Balvatika stages, which is the foundational level meant to prepare them socially and academically.

Education experts say this shift could reduce stress on very young children and ensure that children begin formal learning only when they are developmentally ready.

The Bigger Picture

Haryana isn’t alone. 30 states and union territories across India have already adopted or are moving toward the 6‑year minimum age requirement for Class 1, following NEP 2020 and court directions. However, a few states are still in the process of aligning their rules.

This trend reflects a nationwide reform in early education, aiming to make school readiness more uniform and to avoid children being pushed into formal learning too early.

While it may disrupt some parents’ plans, the aim is to ensure children are developmentally ready when they start formal education, setting them up for a smoother and more effective learning journey.
