Hearing & Speech Development in Children
Jul 31, 2020, 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Amongst all the developmental milestones in children, speech and hearing are the most important developmental skills a child picks up and masters as it grows. The child starts with sounds, moving to babbling and then formation of words and two word phrases, he picks up both receptive and expressive language. With age, a child's vocabulary also widens. In the first few years of life, as we all know, hearing is a significant part of a child's social, emotional, and cognitive development. Lots of things he learns through sounds. Even a mild or partial hearing loss can affect a child's ability to develop speech and language properly.
Language is learned through exposure to sounds. Children pick up words they hear in their environment. But not only language development is dependent on your child’s ability to hear. Their listening skills also influence their ability to learn to both read and write and it greatly influences their social skills as well.
To develop spoken language, children must be able to hear speech clearly and also to hear themselves. If your child's hearing loss is left untreated, their basic language development will often be delayed.

My 2 year old spends 8-10 hours watching Television with his grandmother .She is fond of watching daily soaps and makes him do that too all the time to make him eat food as well. Tried everything possible to explain to them both but all efforts go in vain. He is not able to communicate in words and uses gestures. Could my child's inability to speak be due to excessive viewing of Television ?
