How to Deal with Anxiety & Sleeplessness in Your Child

Jul 05, 2021, 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Anxiety and stress are not only for adults. Studies state that many children aged 3 to 17 years experience anxiety issues. Also, the rate of intense anxiety among teenagers is increasing markedly. It is common for a child to get anxious when they come across new situations and experiences. More often, they get adjusted to the situation after the initial confusion. However, there can be instances where anxiety among the child gets in the way of their normal thoughts, emotions, social, and physical development.

Presently, as we all know, COVID-19 changed a different aspect of our life. As nowadays, the discussions about the virus dominate the news. All these are found to elevate the anxiety level of children.

Research also suggests that anxiety can affect rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. This is the phase of sleep when one tends to have vivid dreams. If you have anxiety, the dreams may be disturbing or turn into nightmares that wake you.

Just as anxiety can affect sleep, sleep can affect anxiety. Sleep anxiety is a common characteristic of insomnia, wherein the individual begins to experience anxiety during the day and evening about poor sleep, which may help cause another night of bad sleep.

Hello Ma'am ! My child who is 6 years old of late has been taking lot of time to sleep. He keeps on tossing and turning on the bed most of the time . He would get up and roam around in the room saying I can't sleep. He is not allowed to watch gadgets before bedtime. His hands also sweat a lot. Is this a sign of some underlying issue such as anxiety? How can I deal with it?

What are the signs of anxiety in a 10 year old child? My girl remains angry from us most of the times. She would lose her cool quickly and even hit her younger sister until she feels revenged for a small prank . I do not understand why is she being edgy and overreacts to even small provocation meant for fun. Is this normal for her age?
