Breastfeeding is the time when mommy and the baby bond with each other; however, breastfeeding is a lot more than just this. It can cause anxiety and stress when the mommy isn't well aware of when to feed, how to feed and whether the baby is full or not yet. There must be so many things going on in your mind – is my milk enough for my baby? Is s/he latching properly? Am I holding my baby the right way to ease breastfeeding?

Hi Nagalakshmi, There is no specific age to start weaning. As per American Academy of Pediatrics, you can continue with breast feeding for as long as both you and your baby are fine with it. Most babies after 1 year of age, naturally wean as they get good food and nutrition from other foods.. Weaning should always be gradual and not sudden and there is no fixed rule, you can even have partial weaning with 1 Breast feed continuing. Substitute 1 feed with Formula or with some solid feed and slowly substitute another one and this way baby will be weaned off.. When introducing bottle for the first time, offer it when baby is not very hungry and also choose bottle with slow flow which matches with breast milk flow. Try keeping baby occupied or busy with his favorite toy or object during the usual breast feeding time schedule, so that baby is not reminded of breast feeding. Do it very gently and lovingly. Babies are very sensitive to the first and the last feed of the day, so try not to disturb these feeds till the baby has got adjusted to the weaning off to the other feeds. If you are giving 2-3 feeds of breast milk in a day then try giving 1-2 of top milk also and inanition to that 3-4 small solid feeds. As you reduce breastfeeds, gradually increase the number of solid and milk feeds 2018-11-28 15:03:33

Hi Trapti, Starting with Formula at an early age can result in baby refusing breast milk and this is linked to decreased milk supply. Also baby gets confused and starts refusing top milk as well. Hence, firstly stop giving Top milk and focus mainly on giving only breast milk. Exclusive breast feeding for first 6 months will help in healthy growth and healthy weight gain in baby. There are many natural and healthy foods that increase milk supply plus they do not cause any harm to babies. These are Carrots, Beet, Dark green veggies like Spinach, Oats, chickpeas, nuts,, sesame seeds, ghee, almonds, cashew, gardencress seeds, edible gum methi seeds and some , spices like, ginger, saunf, black pepper, , aijwain, caraway and turmeric but these foods should be taken in moderation.Drink plenty of water and atleast 2-3 cups of milk in a day. Breast milk supply depends on sucking and the willingness to breastfeed. The more the sucking, more will be the milk production and more will be the supply. Make sure baby is latched or attached well to your breasts as this will ensure good sucking, Hold baby with your arms forming a C shape and face completely turned towards your chest. You can check with your doctor for correct positioning. Feed more often and for longer time on each side. Finally, remain happy and relaxed and do not get stressed. 2018-11-28 15:08:59

Hi Pavithra, It is always advisable that baby should take feed from both the sides. If this has been happening right from the start then doctor needs to examine your baby. But if it has happened recently then it could be due to some ear infection or some soreness in baby's side which is touching your body or it could be due to less supply of milk in your right side. Check on all these options. If you rule out on these then firstly get yourself examined by your doctor and get both your breasts examined to make sure that there is no milk collection especially in the right side. Also try giving your right side first when you start with the feeding or when baby is hungry and this will encourage baby to have feed from that side. You can also take help of breast pump to take out milk from your right side first; this will ensure good flow and easier for baby to Health Drink in case if flow is an issue with right side. Try these options and at the same time start with solid feeds for your baby. 2018-11-28 15:18:26

Hi Sandhya, Baby will give you many indications that he is getting enough milk..Baby spends 10- 15 min on both the breasts during feeding, baby gains weight healthily, & baby is alert and active, appear healthy. Also baby passes atleast 3-4 stools in a day plus 5-6 time normal pale colored urine. You may feel your breast appearing softer after the feed, indicating that baby has taken all and has been well fed. Plus after the feed the baby will give a satisfied relaxed look and at certain times baby may sleep well after the feed. If he refuses at any time it means he is already full, so do not forcibly feed as this may result in baby throwing out the milk. There are many natural and healthy foods that increase milk supply plus they do not cause any harm to babies. These are Carrots, Beet, Dark green veggies like Spinach, Oats, chickpeas, nuts,, sesame seeds, ghee, almonds, cashew, gardencress seeds, edible gum methi seeds and some , spices like, ginger, saunf, black pepper, , aijwain, caraway and turmeric but these foods should be taken in moderation. In addition, drink plenty of water and atleast 2-3 cups of milk in a day and preferably 1 glass prior to breastfeeding. Do not take any medication unless prescribed by doctor and avoid excess of coffee as this can reduce milk supply. 2018-11-28 15:22:44

Hi Jana Priya, To help baby gain weight, include high calorie fruits and veggies like, bananas, pears, peaches, sweet potatoes and avocados. Plus, include whole dairy products, like, cheese, paneer, yogurt and add them to all the recipes. Even by adding boiled potatoes, grains like oats, ragi, daliya or beans like rajma, channa, soybean, quinoa or powdered nuts and seeds to various foods the calorie content can be increased healthily. Giving small feeds made of healthy foods and feeding more frequently makes baby eat more amount of food in a day and that helps in healthy weight gain. Lastly try to make the recipes more interesting by offering more of finger foods, offer variety and offer foods in small amounts but serve it more frequently So keep trying these options Finally, as long as your baby seems happy, active, alert, gaining weight healthily and is not falling sick so often then all is fine. If you're still concerned, talk to your doctor, who can show you your child's growth chart and assure you that she's developing on track. 2018-11-28 15:25:21

Hi Udhayageetha, Firstly your baby does not need any digestive tonic as Breast milk is the best food and works as both Food and tonic for your baby. When milk starts coming from breasts during any breastfeeding session, the first milk that comes is Fore Milk and the milk which comes after few minutes is Hind Milk. Fore milk is thin watery and basically satisfies baby's thirst and after that comes Hind milk, which is rich in fat and proteins that helps in healthy growth and weight gain. If baby is taking only Fore milk then you have to make sure that you continue feeding him for little longer on each side so that baby gets hInd milk as well. Imbalance in Foremilk and hind milk can affect baby's weight gain so its important that you feed baby for longer time on each side. Also some babies take small small feeds at frequent intervals and that is also fine. If you are having over supply then it means that baby is getting hind milk also as after few min of fore milk the Hind milk comes. Do not worry as from your description, it appears that baby is getting hind milk as well. Regarding weight gain, baby usually doubles his birthweight after 6 months and on an average gain 1/2-1 kg/month for first 6 months . So in both cases, it seems baby is doing fine. But if you are still concerned and worried, you can always get your baby examined by your doctor to make sure that he is doing fine. 2018-11-28 15:35:17

Hi Ragini, Baby takes what is offered to him . If you start with bottle/top feeding first and that too at such a young age then naturally baby will take only top feed and refuse breast milk. Breast milk supply depends on baby's sucking and if baby is not sucking then milk supply will reduce and slowly it will stop. Remember, Breast milk is the best and no other milk can match upto it. Hence, you have to try and bring back your baby to breastfeeding. Breast milk can be restarted easily. Breastfeeding works on supply and demand basis, so more the baby feeds and more the breast is stimulated, more milk is produced. For this, firstly, try to put the baby to the breast as often as possible (every 2-3 hours at least). Even if the baby isn’t feeding, have skin-to-skin time. Keep the baby close to your body as much as possible; touch his cheek with yours this will also help. Or try using a pump or hand express for 10-15 minutes on each breast 4-5 times in a day.. Initially milk supply will be low, but gradually it will increase. Baby may not like to Health Drink on empty breast so for that you can first take out milk with the help of breast pump and then put baby on breasts or take out milk and use the feeding bottle to feed your milk. All in all, continue trying to restart breast-feeding, as this will ensure healthy growth of your baby. Also stopping top milk will help to further maximise your breastfeeding efforts. 2018-11-28 15:40:54

Also if you have started with top milk or bottle feeding, even that can reduce milk supply. So check on these as well. You must have also started with solid feeds so make sure you keep a gap between solid and milk feeds, this will ensure baby sucking well and that can help to increase milk supply. Hi Pradip, Breast milk supply depends on sucking and the willingness to breastfeed The more the sucking, more will be the milk production and more will be the supply. For this, check on the tips - 1. Make sure baby is latched or attached well to your breasts as this will ensure good sucking. You can always check with your doctor on correct positioning during breastfeeding 2. Make sure baby is positioned well. Hold baby with your arms forming a C shape and face completely turned towards your chest. This is also known as Cross cradle position. You can google search to get the exact positioning picture or infographics.. 3. Feed more often and for longer time on each side. 4. Drink plenty of water and atleast 2-3 cups of milk in a day. 5. 6. Do not take any medication unless prescribed by doctor and avoid excess of coffee. 7. Remain happy and relaxed and do not get stressed. 2018-11-28 15:47:07
