Hi ..I am exclusively pumping for my 1 month old .He takes about 3 ounce of milk each feed but there are times when I am not able to extract that much milk .What should I do?Does that indicate low milk supply?

Hi Nikita, You put the pump on the lowest setting that extracts milk, not the highest setting you can tolerate. Pump for a maximum of 15 minutes each side. You need to give a gap of 1-1&1/2 hours also, so that sufficient amount is produced. Eat a well balanced protein and calcium rich diet. 2015-11-24 11:31:55

Certain foods help in increasing milk production and can be included in the diet of breastfeeding mother. They are ajwain (omum seeds), zeera (cumin), methi seeds (fenugreek), saunf (fennel seeds), saunth (sund/dried ginger), garlic etc. Seeds like til (sesame seeds), pumpkin seeds, melon seeds and nuts like almond, walnuts & cashewnuts. 2015-11-24 11:33:24

Hi Annie, generally an exclusively breastfed baby rarely gets constipated. If she is on your breast feed only and no top feed, you may increase the frequency of feeding. You may also increase your own fluid intake. 2015-11-24 11:36:37

Hi Chethana, Include enough cereals like dalia, bajra, ragi, oats which are good sources of iron, calcium & vitamins apart from regular staples like chapatti, rice . Green leafy (esp methi, mustard leaves), dals & legumes (masoor, black channa, soybean. 2015-11-24 11:39:23

Do take nuts like almonds, walnuts, peanuts, seeds like sesame, flax, sunflower, as they all provide for extra needs of proteins, essential fats like omega -3, other micronutrients. Enough fluid is required for adequate milk production. It can be provided by milk, milkshakes, juices, buttermilk besides plain water. 2015-11-24 11:40:32

Hi Rimpi, What mother eats has an affect both on the amount and quality of the breast milk. Therefore good nutrition of a breastfeeding mother is important, not only for her own wellbeing but also for the wellbeing of the infant. A mother who is well fed can produce enough milk to fill the stomach and meet the nutrition & growth needs of the infant 2015-11-24 11:42:56
message user image
Puja Vasisht
However, if she is not taking sufficient nutrients in her diet, the amount of milk produced would decrease, leaving the child hungry. Eventually the nutrients provided to the infant would be lesser than needed and mother herself becomes depleted in her nutrient reserves (basically calcium, iron & proteins). 2015-11-24 11:43:54

Puja Vasisht
Hi Sara, the type of diet you are taking affects the amount and to a certain extent, the nutrients present in the milk. During lactation a mother’s needs for certain nutrients like energy, protein, calcium, vitamins goes up to produce that amount of milk. 2015-11-24 11:46:07
message user image
Puja Vasisht
If she doesn’t match up the demands of these extra nutrients in her diet, eventually the amount produced by her would go down. Though the quality and composition would be maintained to some extent. Eventually less amount milk produced would mean less milk and nutrients available to the infant. Hence good nutrition is important. 2015-11-24 11:47:00

Hi Pradnya, papaya doesn't increase the milk supply but is a good source of beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient required in lactation. 2015-11-24 12:17:35

No, besan or any stuff which is well cooked and easily tolerated by your system, would not give any problem to baby's digestion. 2015-11-24 12:19:16

Hi Annie, in this case, you may pump immediately after the feed- waiting an hour or so decreases the likelihood the breast will be full as possible for the next feed. 2015-11-24 12:30:55

When a baby takes feed the hormones help in further milk production. So if you pump after that milk production would be higher. 2015-11-24 12:32:58

Hi Komal, you need to check your if the baby is able to latch properly or not. You should also be feeding on both sides.Another reason could also be low milk supply. For that you need to take care of your diet. 2015-11-24 12:36:53

Puja Vasisht
You may try feeding him on both sides. At times, baby keeps feeding not just to fill his stomach but it is also a way of bonding with mother. A baby feels secure when being breasfed. 2015-11-24 13:02:09

So pumping your milk and bottle feeding would not provide that bond to baby. 2015-11-24 13:03:07

For proper latching, the baby has to take as much of the aerola as possible in his mouth. He should be suckling rhythmically and deeply, in short bursts separated by pauses. You can also hear his swallowing regularly. 2015-11-24 13:06:48

As told you a baby gets emotional security, so if at times he is just wanting to play, let him do it. Eventually when he grows a little older, he would find other things in his environment to play with. 2015-11-24 13:08:13
