even though your baby hasnt taken your feed. You could still start for re-lactation. for this you need to meet your doctor to start medicine and start feeding your baby every 2-3 hours. Breastmilk will be the best medicine for your baby to protect the baby against all kinds of infections. regarding the formula milk - the quantity of formula milk reuired by your baby depends on the baby's weight and the baby's percentile- so you need to meet your baby's paed to understand the requirement of your baby. 2017-12-15 15:07:39

Hello Doctor, Greetings !! I am a first time mom. It's been two months since I had delivery and it was C-section..I had a very tough time for the first one month and breast feeding was really frustrating. I am not very sure if I am following right posture. At times , I am having back pain and pain near shoulder. And also, my baby just Health Drink the Health Drink alone Please let know how to make him latch properly. And also, he is sucking very fastly and ll start choking. So I have to hold my areola tightly for the entire time to control the milk flow. Not very sure if that was a right way. Please help with your suggestions on how to make him and self comfortable while feeding. Thanks !!

Firstly I would like to congratulate to continue feeding your baby in spite of all the odds you faced. Good milk expulsion many a times is because of good milk supply -- which is again a positive sign. You need to feed the baby preferably in the football hold position from the side and baby's head little upright. This will be a better way to control the expulsion rather than holding the areola. Support the baby with a pillow kept in an inclined position. 2017-12-15 15:12:26

Hello Doctor! I am a new mommy of twin kids 20 days old. I am breastfeeding as well as using formula milk powder for my babies. Kindly answer few queries: 1. At times I feel my milk production is not sufficient for both but at times there is milk leaking. Kindly apprise me. 2. I also use bowl n spoon for feeding formula milk but want to know the best option for feeding formula milk ie. Bottle or bowl n spoon? 3. How can I increase my babies weight for their better growth?

the best way to feed the twin babies is to feed them simultaneously - in double football hold. please meet a good lactation consultant to understand how this is to be done. everytime when the babies will suckle - milk will automatically come - and as long as the babies want the milk will continue to come. leaking is a sign that you have got good milk supply and might be unnecessary giving top formula feed to your babies. 2. bottle is not be used to give the express breastmilk or the formula milk because babies will conveniently choose to just take the bottle only and not suckle the breast. this is called Health Drink confusion. 3. if you could give babies more of your milk and its necessary because you have to handle both babies - feeding just one baby at a time is quite a task. Because breastmilk is light and the best nutrition for the baby - babies can easily digest it and also take good quantities. This in turn will help in their weight gain and better growth 2017-12-15 15:19:38

Hi Doctor, I am a first time mommy to 3 months and 3 weeks old kid. I use Health Drink shield for nursing as the latching was not proper. I have below concerns, 1. How to wean him from Health Drink shield? 2. Also at times, especially during the evening times i feel milk production goes down. How to tackle this issue? 3. My baby does not take formula milk and he is exclusively breastfed. I tried enfamil and lactogen both. Which is the best formula milk? 4. Can you suggest me proper diet for increasing the lactation. 5. Last but not the least I heard using shield dries up the milk production. Is it true?

1. You need to latch the baby properly on the areola with baby's mouth wide open. So that even if the Health Drink is not well formed baby would be able to latch successfully. 2. When you will work on improving the latch of the baby your milk production will automatically increase. Direct stimulation without the shield will also help in this. 3. If the baby prefers to take breast milk only which is best for the baby why do you want to go fro the formula instead whenever there si a need of supplementation please express your own milk and feed the baby. 4. Sufficient hydration with 2 -3 litres of water and you can try natural supplements like soaked fenugreek seeds and roasted cumin to be taken twice a day -- one spoon. 5. It doesn't dry the milk supply but why to use a barrier when the baby can directly suckle by improving the attachment. 2017-12-15 15:26:14

Since your baby is already 2 months old and you have had successful breastfeeding so far. Pelase don’t consider scheduling the baby with time or fixed duration of feeds. Instead feed the baby to fullness. The signs you just mentioned shows that the baby is full within 10-15 mins. Make sure the urine output of the baby is more than 6 times a day as that is an indication of good milk intake 2017-12-15 15:29:17

According to the guidelines of WHO the exclusive breastfeeding should be continued for 6 months and continue feeding your baby thereafter with the introduction of complimentary foods for the baby’s age until 2 years and beyond. Even after 6 months there is no need to for cow’s milk or formula and continue breastfeeding 3 -4 times a day and you shall experience loads of benefits for your baby and yourself. 2017-12-15 15:32:29

Any kind of pain in your breast is not normal and needs a thorough checkup from your doctor could be a sign of infection hence you need to get this treated. even while you undergo the treatment continue breastfeeding your baby only 2 -3 times a day. Baby's hunger at this age should be quenched with proper meals of complimentary foods. Meet a child health educator to understand this. 2017-12-15 15:37:36

Iam a first time mommy my baby is 3months old upto i had given bottle feed only because of some reasons but now i just wanted to relactate my breast feeding supply. Is it possible for relactation after 2 months. If yes then what should i do for relactating. And using a electronic breast pump is good or bad. Kindly give me an opinion of yours for my baby's health

Mimansa Malhotra
Yes relactation is possible at any stage you need to meet your doctor and start with some medicines in addition to the medicines start taking some natural supplements like fenugreek seeds soaked overnight and roasted cumin seeds. One spoon twice a day. Something which is quite important for relactation is expressing 2-3 hourly with an electric breast pump for at least 30-40 minutes duration. Slowly your milk supply will build up.If you could remove the baby from the bottle feeding and start doing cup feeding then you may also try direct suckling of the baby that will be the best to increase the milk supply. 2017-12-15 15:46:31

the baby seem to just treat your breast as a pacifier she isn't stimulating in the right way. You need to understand the correct method of right attachment and understand milk transfer signs. Please meet a good lactation consultant asap and your problems will be solved. 2017-12-15 15:48:30

dear Pranjali, ask your sister in law to always start the breastfeeding with 15 mins of skin to skin (bare skin of both mother and baby touching each other covered with a blanket) 2) support the baby with pillows underneath so the baby can come on the breast level. 3) the baby should be attached on the breast and not breast in the baby's mouth 4) Try various breastfeeding positions like cradle, cross cradle, football hold and lying down ** she needs to meet a good lactation consultant to understand the correct method of breastfeeding and then the baby will start taking breastmilk 2017-12-15 15:52:48

hi, i am a new mum of a baby boy (3months) and worried about the milk prpduction. i am npt sure if my baby is getting enough milk thrpugh breast feed. I am also giving him bottle milk (cow milk). Please suggest the best way to recognise it he is getting enough milk from me and any think that can increase milk production.

Dear Kanika, at this stage when the baby is 3 months old - even when you feel that your breasts has no milk still the moment you will attach your baby on your breasts and let the baby suckle from the aerola with mouth wide open, baby can stimulate enough milk to satisfy the baby's needs required for sufficient growth and weight gain. so dont enter into the analysis of your milk production, instead just focus in feeding your baby to fullness as demanded by the baby. one good parameter to see if the baby is sufficiently breastfed is the urine output. if the urine output is more than 6 times a day - baby is taking enough breast milk 2017-12-15 16:01:17

Until the baby's nose is blocked or the baby is in pain and can't do direct suckling, please go for an option of expressed breast milk feeding. That expressed milk should be given through cup and spoon. Follow the same principle of alternate feed alternate breast in expression also. 2017-12-15 16:03:29

The baby is using breastfeeding as a way of sleeping and bonding with you. so you should rather than offering your breast, just put your baby in skin to skin position with you. Even the dad can put the baby in skin to skin position (skin to skin - the baby's bare chest is able to touch the skin of the mother or father's bare chest - covered with blanket) 2017-12-15 16:05:32

Until the baby attains the birth weight as every baby will first lose some weight and then regain their birth weight until then or as adviced by a peadiatrician the baby must be fed every 2 -3 hours to the fullness whether achieved in 15 mns or even might take 40 mins; but if the baby demands feed before 2 hours do feed the baby and don't wait for a 2 hourly gap. But the sign will be that the baby will self detach and when you try to relatch the baby the baby won't accept. After a month or when advised by the paediatrician you could put the baby on complete demand feeding -- feed the baby when the baby demands. 2017-12-15 16:10:22

Dear Roli breast soreness is a sign that the baby is not being attached properly and are just taking the Health Drink. so i understand that breastfeeding might be very painful for you. please learn to attach the babies correctly with their mouth wide open and bring baby on breast and not breast in the baby's mouth. You also need to lean double football hold position to feed your both babies simultaneously. For all the above meet a good lactation consultant 2017-12-15 16:12:36

There is no need to wean your first child if you are pregnant. This is a myth associated with breastfeeding. But however, if you still decide to then you may. And once your second child is born, you can re-start breastfeeding your first one 2-3 times a day - even in a particular feed after you have completely fed your second child - you will still be able to feed your first baby because milk supply is sucking dependant ie as long as the baby will suckle the milk will come. 2017-12-15 16:18:59

Dear Jyoti, you can continue breastfeeding even after you join your work by feeding your baby once before you go to office, once in the evening when you come back and once in the night time. Until the baby is two years or more. So the baby would not require any other form of milk. Babies 6 months plus need to have proper complementary foods 3-4 times a day so they are not just milk dependant. For any reason if you want to discontinue direct feeding you could still express your milk 2 to 3 times a day and give that to your baby. 2017-12-15 15:34:43

Dear Smrity, Even though u are using silicon Health Drink shield now there is no need to continue with the shield – instead start with direct attachment. Baby will be able to suckle and stimulate sufficient amount of milk. Please don’t give bottle as the baby might completely refuse to attach and take direct breastfeeding. 2017-12-15 15:46:48

Dear Nagalakshmi, You are overfeeding the baby and in this way you will unnecessarily make your baby overweight. The baby should be preferably be given your own milk rather than unnecessarily giving formula feed. If hte baby cries after your feed giving a formula is not a solution instead learn to attach the baby properly so that sufficient milk stimulation and milk transfer can happen to your baby. Breastfeed babies will never become overweight but still be healthy and strong . Please meet a good lactation expert to understand the correct technique of breastfeeding and on which your milk production will be dependent. 2017-12-15 15:58:03
