About one in three babies suffer from tummy discomfort issues such as colic, constipation and other gastrointestinal disorders. Your baby ’s gastrointestinal tract is populated by millions of bacteria soon after birth. There has been some research around the concept that perhaps changing the bacterial flora may have a positive effect in reducing stomach problems particularly colic.

What are the benefits of L.reuteri probiotic for your baby?

  1. L.reuteri probiotic can be thought of as healthy or friendly bacteria that have a beneficial effect on the gut (stomach). These “good bacteria” can help with digestion and in the development of the immune system.  They also help to restore the natural balance of bacteria in the gut.

  2. Colonising the gut by these healthy bacteria helps to reduce the concentration of gas-forming bacteria. This reduces the gas build up and brings relief from tummy discomfort and colic pain.

  3. Lactobacillus reuteri(L.reuteri) is also naturally present in human breast milk. It has been found to be effective in preventing,   relieving breastfed babies from colic.

  4. L.reuteri probiotic use has not been associated with any significant side effects and these are usually well tolerated in babies and children.

Hi, Black Health Drink baby can be due to side effects of some medications or to some tonics like Iron or multivitamin tonics. In any case, it is better that you consult your doctor and get it examined. 2019-04-17 15:01:53

Hi Mehak, 3. As per the WHO Growth chart, your child’s weight should be 16.2kg. But, a child’s diet history, medical history, etc needs to be known to make a complete assessment. All babies grow and achieve different milestones at their own pace. So as long as your child seems happy, active, alert, eating a variety of foods and is not falling sick so often then all is fine. If you're still concerned, talk to your doctor, who can show you your child's growth chart and assure you that he's developing on track. 2019-04-17 15:04:05

Hi, During the first year of life, your baby’s little digestive system undergoes major changes as it learns to digest, absorb and excrete. Many babies experience discomfort and abdominal pain during this time, which can lead to excessive crying. This has been related to Colic. Scientific research has found that healthy gut flora is a key factor in helping your baby’s digestive system develop and adapt to its new challenges. Colicky babies are shown to have a less healthy gut flora composition. Therefore, by encouraging the development of healthy gut flora in your baby you can reduce the symptoms. Give small frequent feeds, feed baby in an upright position and also after feed help baby to burp. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your baby, L.reuteri is an easy way to help against the symptoms of colic. L.reuteri is a healthy probiotic culture naturally occurring in breast milk, which has been found to be especially effective in reducing crying and colic. It promotes the development of healthy gut flora. You can check with your doctor on starting with these supplements or for choosing an alternative to know more about the right milk with L.reuteri. 2019-04-17 15:07:56

Colic pain usually happens due to the gas formation which in turn is related to poor digestion. Colic pain may go off after 6-7 months but in some babies, it may get extended, Yes foods that mother eats while breastfeeding may also cause the gas formation and may result in indigestion. Hence, if you know which foods are causing trouble, then try removing them from your diet. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your baby, L.reuteri is an easy way to help against the symptoms of colic. Hi, All babies cry. It is natural and is a part of adaptation to their new environment and growing up. But, some babies can cry for long periods without responding to your usual comforting methods. This is generally referred to as colic. Colicky infants may cry for more than 3 hours per day If a baby is suffering from Colic, the daily sleeping time is reduced by almost 2 hours. Babies suffering from colic often experience disturbed sleep, which is unhealthy for them. Scientific research has found that healthy gut flora is a key factor in helping your baby’s digestive system develop and adapt to its new challenges. Colicky babies are shown to have a less healthy gut flora composition. Therefore, by encouraging the development of healthy gut flora in your baby you can help alleviate the symptoms of colic. L.reuteri (Lactobacillus reuteri) is a healthy probiotic culture naturally occurring in breast milk, which has been found to be especially effective in reducing crying and colic. It promotes the development of healthy gut flora. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your baby, L.reuteri is an easy way to help against the symptoms of colic. So discuss with your doctor on starting with these supplements. 2019-04-17 15:16:43

Vandana Chawla
Hi Shilpa, Around 2-6 weeks of age, the baby’s bowel movements may decrease. This does not indicate that the baby has constipation. Baby’s digestive system is getting matured, due to which the baby is able to digest the food well and hence fewer bowel movements. Baby has constipation if there is no bowel movement for at least 3 days (bottle fed) or a week (breastfed), bowels are very hard and baby cries a lot while passing motion. For breastfed babies, try checking your own diet as certain foods in your diet or lack of fiber in your diet may be the cause. Since L.reuteri (Lactobacillus reuteri) is a healthy probiotic that promotes the development of healthy gut flora and supports the maturation and adaptation process of the digestive system, therefore it will effective in treating issues related to baby’s digestion. You can check with your doctor on starting with these supplements or for choosing an alternative to know more about the right milk with L.reuteri. 2019-04-17 15:22:55

Hi Meenu, Spitting of the milk after the feed is seen if the baby is not positioned well during the feed due to which baby takes in the air while feeding or if the baby is taking in more milk that he needs. Kindly check on these, kindly correct baby's positioning while feeding and also if your milk flow is too much then try controlling it mechanically with your own hand. Continue with breastfeeding, as it will help in the healthy growth of your baby. 2019-04-17 15:24:18

Hi Priyanka, When baby starts with solids then make sure that you do not reduce and replace milk feeds as this may affect the baby’s stool passage. Also after every solid feed give baby 1-2tsp of boiled cooled water. This will help in better digestion. In addition, include foods like prune puree or pear puree, warm water or warm soup, as these are natural laxatives but offer in small amounts as excess can cause diarrhea. Do not start with Laxatives unless it becomes very essential. Regarding L reuteri, since it promotes the development of healthy gut flora and supports the maturation and adaptation process of the digestive system, therefore it will effective in treating issues related to baby’s digestion. You can check with your doctor on starting with these supplements or for choosing an alternative to know more about the right milk with L.reuteri. 2019-04-17 15:25:48

Hi Heena, During the first year of life, your baby’s little digestive system undergoes major changes as it learns to digest, absorb and excrete. Many babies experience discomfort abdominal pain or indigestion. If a baby is passing watery stools then it is considered diarrhea, and if its just passing soft stools more frequently then it is not diarrhea. Your doctor will be able to diagnose this better. Also, during any such episode if a baby is put on antibiotics then baby’s count of healthy bacteria in the gut goes down and this can make baby’s digestion very weak. Hence discuss with your doctor on starting with Probiotics. Scientific research has found that healthy gut flora is a key factor in helping your baby’s digestive system develop and keeping it healthy. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your baby, L.reuteri is an easy way to help against the symptoms related to baby’s digestion L.reuteri is a healthy probiotic culture naturally occurring in breast milk, which has been found to be especially effective in the development of healthy gut flora. Hi Tanya, Pain in the abdomen, mainly after eating is usually related to indigestion, the formation of gases and weak gut. Probiotic supplements are needed as this help in building and restoring healthy bacteria in baby’s gut. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your baby, L.reuteri is an easy way to help against the symptoms related to baby’s digestion L.reuteri is a healthy probiotic culture naturally occurring in breast milk, which has been found to be especially effective in the development of healthy gut flora. Hi Ratna, As per the WHO Growth chart, your child’s weight should be 14kg, so she is just fine. If just recently you noticed your child complaining of stomach ache, it could be related to some new food in her diet. Please check if you have introduced any new food to your child. Try removing that food from her diet and give her soft easily digested food with fewer spices and less oil. Give her small meals and if all this does not help then you can consult your doctor and get her examined. Also, you can check with your doctor on starting with Probiotics. Probiotics are the live microorganisms contained in the food we eat and deliver Healthy/Good bacteria directly to the large intestine. Hence, Probiotic supplements help in building and restoring healthy bacteria in baby’s gut. 2019-04-17 15:02:43

Hi Ashoka, Probiotics are the live microorganisms contained in the food we eat and deliver Healthy/Good bacteria directly to the large intestine. Hence, Probiotic supplements help in building and restoring healthy bacteria in baby’s gut. Research has indicated that Probiotics supplements are safe for infants, kids, and even pregnant women. The benefits of probiotics will only last while actively using them. Hence, anytime when a baby is put on antibiotic or baby has some infection then his good bacteria count may go down and that is the time when baby again needs Probiotics. So whenever the baby has digestion related issue or if the baby is on medication, always check with your doctor if the baby at that time needs Probiotics or not. 2019-04-17 15:05:36

Hi Sahista, If the baby is having an infection, again and again, it means the baby’s gut is weak or count of healthy bacteria in her intestine is less. Plus she has been put on antibiotics to treat infection, this would have further reduced the healthy bacteria count. Therefore, the baby needs Probiotic supplements. Probiotics are the live microorganisms contained in the food we eat and give Healthy/Good bacteria directly to the intestine. Hence, Probiotic supplements help in building and restoring healthy bacteria in baby’s gut. Therefore, continue with the medication that the doctor has prescribed, plus discuss with your doctor on starting with Probiotic supplements. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your baby, L.reuteri is an easy way to help against the symptoms of colic. Hi Sahista, Kindly check with your doctor on type, dosage, and ways of giving Probiotic supplements to your child. You can also discuss with your doctor to know more about the right milk with L.reuteri. To help baby gain weight, include high-calorie fruits and veggies like bananas, pears, peaches, sweet potatoes, and avocados. Plus, include whole dairy products, like, cheese, paneer, yogurt and add them to all the recipes. Even by adding boiled potatoes, grains like oats, ragi, daliya or beans like rajma, channa, soybean, quinoa or powdered nuts and seeds to various foods the calorie content can be increased healthily. Giving small feeds made of healthy foods and feeding more frequently makes the baby eat more amount of food in a day and that helps in healthy weight gain. Lastly try to make the recipes more interesting by offering more of finger foods, offer variety and offer foods in small amounts but serve it more frequently So keep trying these options. 2019-04-17 15:49:49

Vandana Chawla
Hi Mala, At this age, babies are introduced to new foods. So best is to give only 1-2 solid feeds and only 1-2 tablespoon in each feed. Offer 5-6 milk feeds (150-175ml per feed) Continue with breast milk, do not stop or reduce it. As the baby grows older you can give more amounts in each solid feed. Start with single foods, like a pureed apple or rice cereal and when a baby is well adjusted to it, you can offer other foods like pureed carrot, sweet potato, and mashed banana. Slowly you can move to ragi porridge, rava kheer, mashed dal, etc. Make sure you do not add spices or sugar to any of these foods. Also at this age, milk still remains the main feed hence do not reduce or replace with milk feeds. Regarding constipation, include foods like prune puree or pear puree as these are natural laxatives but offer in small amounts as excess can cause diarrhea. Simple home remedies to treat Constipation are to gently massage baby's tummy in a circular motion two fingers below the navel, move baby's legs in a circular motion by placing baby on the bed or by giving the baby a warm bath to relax him. If the baby is on Formula milk then prepare the milk correctly as too thick milk can be the cause or try changing the brand. You can check with your doctor on starting with these supplements or for choosing an alternative to know more about the right milk with L.reuteri 2019-04-17 15:55:45

Hi Reena, Bloating basically means the presence of gases and this is related to poor digestion. During the first year of life, your baby’s little digestive system undergoes major changes as it learns to digest, absorb and excrete. Many babies experience discomfort abdominal pain or indigestion. Hi Saroj, Not sleeping well, discomfort feeling, crying at night, and baby feeling better after passing gas is all related to colic or low count of healthy bacteria in baby’s gut. Hi Pehu, Colic is a condition of discomfort which is diagnosed by doctors by Rule of 3, which means baby cries 3 times in a day three times in a week and usually seen till 3 months of age. In colic baby cries hard for a long time despite efforts to calm, usually begins around the same time and mainly after meal times. Colic episodes may last from a few minutes to three hours or more on any given day. Baby feels better after passing motion or gases and baby's tummy looks bloated or hard. Baby has constipation if there is no bowel movement for at least 3 days (bottle fed) or a week (breastfed), bowels are very hard and baby cries a lot while passing motion. Although both are different, both are related to a weak digestive system and this can be related to a low amount of healthy bacteria in the baby’s gut. Whether you breast or bottle-feed your baby, L.reuteri is an easy way to help against the symptoms related to baby’s digestion L.reuteri is a healthy probiotic culture naturally occurring in breast milk, which has been found to be especially effective in the development of healthy gut flora. L. reuteri functions through the production of a natural antibiotic substance called reuterin. Reuterin helps to keep the intestinal microbe system healthy by inhibiting the growth of many harmful bacteria, yeast, and fungi and thereby helps in keeping digestion strong and preventing or managing colic. 2019-04-17 16:07:09

Hi, During the Growth spurt, the baby takes more feed, sleeps more and also the entire first-year baby is in a growth spurt phase. Regarding crying this could be related to Colic or some abdominal discomfort. During the first year of life, your baby’s little digestive system undergoes major changes as it learns to digest, absorb and excrete. Many babies experience discomfort abdominal pain or indigestion. Hence discuss with your doctor on starting with Probiotics.
