As a new parent you sometimes feel helpless when your baby is crying incessantly, it can be quite unsettling and heart-breaking. Sometimes all your attempts to soothe your baby go in vain. But do you know why is your baby crying? Is your baby crying because of colic? A colicky baby can be normal during the day but might end up crying excessively every evening. About every 1 in 5 babies may have suffered from colic at some point, usually seen in babies from 2 to4 weeks after birth.

What Are Colic Signs & Symptoms in Infants?

When your baby cries inconsolably, while otherwise healthy, it is called colic (also known as infantile colic). Here’s how your doctor will diagnose colic-

  • Your baby is less than five months of age

  • He cries for three hours or more at a stretch

  • The crying occurs at least three days of the week

  • The crying bouts last for at least three weeks

What Causes Colicky Pain in My Infant?

Your colicky baby might start crying suddenly. There have been numerous beliefs that the crying could be related to abdominal pain caused by trapped gas or overfeeding. One popular reason is that a new-born’s digestive system is not well developed and it cannot easily breakdown the proteins in breast milk or formula, causing painful gas. Some experts also believe that bouts of crying could be due to the urge to let off steam for sensitive babies. Since the episodes of crying are usually in the evenings, babies may get over-stimulated due to the sounds, lights or sensations around them.

How Can Baby's Colic Prevented & Managed By L.reuteri, the probiotic?

It has been scientifically proven that L.reuteri, a probiotic (made up of friendly bacteria, which controls your infant's tummy) is effective in preventing and managing baby's colic. The various benefits of this probiotic include: it is found in breast milk, reduces your baby's crying time & also prevents & manages/ relieves your baby from colic & constipation

Hi Ekta, Probiotics are helpful bacteria that make up our microbiome. They occur naturally in certain foods and also come in supplement form. Probiotics help replenish body’s "good bacteria." Which then, in turn, helps with digestion, immune system function plus may help to treat or prevent certain diseases. Probiotics are helpful during diarrhoea or constipation—both of which are common for kids, It just tries to bring the digestion back to normal which may be disturbed during any intestinal infection/ condition. One such probiotic is L.reuteri. Lactobacillus reuteri or L. reuteri is a probiotic bacteria that lives in the mouth and gut. It helps to prevent many health issues in babies and children. The most notable benefit of L.reuteri is that it’s effective in preventing and managing colic in babies. Lactobacillus reuteri(L.reuteri) is also naturally present in human breast milk.In addition, probiotics can help children already taking antibiotics, which also may cause stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea, and probiotics can ease these side effects. Probiotics are safe for kids. But since all probiotics work differently, hence its better talk to your doctor before starting with the supplementation. 2019-03-27 15:05:08

Hi Rajesh, Colic is usually seen in babies from 2-4 weeks after birth and goes off by the time the baby is 5-6 months of age. In colic baby cries hard for a long time despite efforts to calm her, usually begins around the same time and mainly after meal times. Baby feels better after passing motion or gases and baby's tummy looks bloated or hard. Colic is also checked by Rule of 3, which means baby cries 3 times in a day three times in a week and usually seen till 3 months of age. Every cry of a baby cannot be taken as Colic. Colic crying is intense and is often high pitched and baby's face may flush. During Colic, baby curls up legs clenches fists and abdominal muscles get tensed and hard. In a healthy well-fed baby, signs of colic are, baby cries about the same time every day, usually in the late afternoon or evening. Colic episodes may last from a few minutes to three hours or more on any given day. Baby feels better after passing motion or gases and baby's tummy looks bloated or hard. And as far as preventing colic is concerned, there have been studies that suggest probiotics like L.reuteri help in preventing and managing colic in babies. L.reuteri probiotic can be thought of as healthy or friendly bacteria that have a beneficial effect on the baby’s stomach. These "good bacteria" can help with digestion and in the development of the immune system. They also help to restore the natural balance of bacteria in the gut. 2019-03-27 15:12:00

Hi Rida, Yes, sabudana can bind the stomach contents and can be the cause of constipation. Include foods like prune puree or pear/plum puree are natural laxatives but offer in small amounts as excess can cause diarrhoea. In addition, you can include fibre in the form of infant cereals, ragi, oats, daliya, veggie sticks, pureed beans, dals and also giving warm water or warm soup. Do not start with Laxatives unless it becomes very essential. If constipation is very bad that baby cries or passes blood then do consult your doctor immediately. 2019-03-27 15:15:47

Hi Ratna, You have to increase the amount of fibre, fluid in your kid's food. For fibre, use different types of cereals like ragi, jowar, millet, oats, porridge, as well as fruits, vegetables, salads, and also use sprouted pulses, gram, rajma, greed, and nuts such as cashew nuts, almonds, give. For fluids, offer water more often; milk should be given at least 2-3 times a day; Prunes, dates are also natural laxatives that will help him in constipation. Along with this, note that the kid follows regular toilet timings and habits. Finally exercise in any form like cycling, playing in the garden or engaging in any sport will also help. Also, you can check with your doctor if the baby needs Probiotic supplements as the lowering of Healthy bacteria in the gut may also be the cause. Many studies suggest that probiotics help prevent colic and other tummy related health issues in children. One such probiotic is L.reuteri. It is a probiotic that has proven to be helpful in preventing & managing a baby’s colic and other tummy discomfort issues like constipation. Hence, not only it does reduce your baby’s crying time but also inhibits the severity of infections related to intestines or occurring in intestines and modulates the immune system. 2019-03-27 15:25:24

Hi Zahida, At this age, your kid should be taking 2-3 cups of milk and 4-5 small meals. Make your kid’s diet rich in healthy carbs, proteins, B vitamins, iron and calcium. Healthy carbs and B vitamins will give energy Health Drink; include foods like whole grain cereals, oats, daliya, ragi, jowar, bajra, bread, fruits, and veggies. Proteins will help to build up stamina, plus will satisfy appetite for a long time, so give egg (3-4) in a week, lean meat, dals, and beans, like, rajma, chana etc. Finally, milk, yogurt, and cheese will give calcium, proteins and many other nutrients, which are vital for growth and activity.।try adding powdered nuts and seeds like walnuts, sunflower or pumpkin seeds to milk, yogurt or cereals. finally, give small meals, more finger foods, but packed with nutrients. 2019-03-27 15:27:31

Hi Nita, 3. Colic is usually seen in the first few months of age and usually goes off by 6 months. Later if you notice colic-like symptoms then it could be related to a few things, one is certain foods in baby’s diet which is causing an allergic reaction. Hence, maintain a food diary, to note down types of food baby is eating and his reaction to the those, if you notice certain foods causing stomach pain or allergic reaction then remove them. Also check the type of milk given, if its Cow’s milk or the Formula, in either case, try changing the brand and try giving in little diluted form. Next, give small meals, give feeds at small intervals, do not keep long gaps, and do not force feed the baby. Make sure baby is passing motions regularly. And lastly, get your baby examined and check with your doctor if he needs Probiotic supplements. 2019-03-27 15:07:54

Hence, Probiotic supplements help in building and restoring healthy bacteria in baby’s gut. If a baby has been on antibiotic recently, then baby’s gut may have become weak or the number of healthy bacteria may go down and Probiotic supplements will help to restore that Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) is a probiotic bacteria that live in the mouth and gut. So whether your baby needs Probiotics or not that your doctor can advise you after doing baby’s examination. There are certain foods that help in the release of some happy chemicals in the body plus they try to keep the baby’s brain satisfied and hence helps to relax and calm baby. For babies till 6 months of age, Breast milk is the most calming and relaxing food for the baby. Plus mother’s closeness and warmth is an added advantage. From 6 -8 months of age, in addition of breast milk, Rice cereal, mashed banana, apple puree or peach puree are all calming foods. From 8 months, add more calming foods to your baby’s diet like yogurt, a variety of infant cereals, cheese. Give small feeds, so that baby’s tummy is full, do not give large meals as that can be upsetting for baby’s tummy and can make baby irritable. 2019-03-27 16:19:21

Hi Natasha, Colic can occur both in breastfed as well as in Formula fed babies. If the baby is on Formula and you notice colic-like symptoms then you can check with your doctor on changing the brand or the way in which the milk is prepared as both too thick or too diluted milk can cause Colic like symptoms to the baby. You can also take advice from your doctor and if there is some digestion related issue, then check with your doctor if baby needs Probiotic supplements as the lowering of Healthy bacteria in the gut may also be the cause. L-reuteri Probiotic has been known to give relief from colic and other digestion related issues. Hence, you can check with your doctor on the same. 2019-03-27 16:25:53

Hi Hema, Breast milk is the best milk and works both as a food and tonic for the babies. Continue with breastfeeding. Avoid certain foods in your diet like cabbage, onion, spicy or oily foods and also excess intake of caffeine as this may cause colic-like symptoms in your baby. If your baby shows anytime colic-like symptoms then you can also check with your doctor if baby needs Probiotic supplements. Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) is a probiotic bacteria that live in the mouth and gut. It helps to prevent many health issues in babies and children. One of the most notable benefits is its effectiveness in treating colic in babies. L. reuteri functions through the production of a natural antibiotic substance called reuterin. Reuterin helps to keep the intestinal microbe system healthy by inhibiting the growth of many harmful bacteria, yeast, and fungi. As babies with colic in many studies have shown to have a low count of Good Bacteria in their intestine, researchers have got some positive results in giving babies Probiotic supplements, like L reuteri to solve the colic. So whether your baby needs Probiotics or not that your doctor can advise you after doing baby’s examination. 2019-03-27 16:34:16

Hi Swetha, Newborn often spits. This is very common. Do not worry. This is mainly due to baby taking in the air during feeding. To avoid this, make sure that baby is positioned well and latched well, during every feeding session. Baby's mouth should cover your breasts completely and secondly, baby's head is slightly in an upright position. Also after feed very gently help the baby to burp. This will also take out the air and gases if any formed. Regarding losing weight, An ideal way of coming back to shape is to Exercise and Healthy Eating. For healthy eating, eat small meals and eat more frequently. This will Health Drink your metabolism plus you will eat less at every meal. Keeping long gaps in between meals can result in a craving for sugary foods and also eating large meals at one time, resulting in weight gain. Eat a good amount of fruit and vegetables and include plenty of fibre-rich foods like oats, beans, lentils, grains and seeds in your meals. Seeds like chia seeds, flax seeds and foods like avocados, sweet potatoes, bananas when added to any snack or meal will keep you full for a longer time. Keep healthy Snacks like nuts & seeds, fruit or veggie salad, crackers with cheese dip or fruit smoothie handy. Cut down on fatty, fried, spicy and sugary foods 2019-03-27 15:32:35

My baby is 7 months old only starts crying at late evening. My baby sleeps a lot during the day and in the evening but at night from 11 to 5 in the morning, making my little one sleep is a struggle. Is this because of colic or something else?

Hi Amita, Every cry of the baby cannot be taken as Colic. Colic is usually seen in babies from 2-4 weeks after birth and goes off by the time the baby is 5-6 months of age. You can also check if its some food which is causing the pain as this is the time when a baby is introduced to new foods. At the same time, check if it is the change in milk type which is causing pain or else it could also be related to teething. Do not worry, all these are temporary. Also, you can check with your doctor if the baby needs Probiotic supplements as the lowering of Healthy bacteria in the gut may also be the cause. L-reuteri Probiotic has been known to give relief from colic and other digestion related issues. Hence, you can check with your doctor on the same. 2019-03-27 15:39:55

Hi Naitik, Yes, it can be very stressful and painful to see your little one crying during an episode of Colic. To give relief to the baby from Colic, massage baby's tummy in a circular movement so as to help your baby to pass wind. Feed in an upright position so that the baby does not take any air and pick up the baby after every feed. Also, put the baby in a cradle and rock her, or carry her in a sling on your stomach Offer small feeds and if you are breastfeeding, avoid certain foods in your diet like cabbage, onion, spicy or oily foods and also excess intake of caffeine. Probiotics are the live microorganisms contained in the food we eat. They remain intact throughout the digestive process and deliver Healthy/Good bacteria directly to the large intestine. Hence, Probiotic supplements help in building and restoring healthy bacteria in baby’s gut. Probiotics are safe for kids. But since all probiotics work differently, hence its better to talk to your doctor before starting with the supplementation. . L-reuteri Probiotic has been known to give relief from colic and other digestion related issues. Hence, you can check with your doctor on the same. 2019-03-27 16:39:07

Hi Lokesh, Babies usually learn to sit with support from 6 months of age. This happens only when the baby's head and neck muscles are strong enough to help baby to sit. Do not worry in case if there is a slight delay as every baby follows his/her own time-line. 2019-03-27 16:41:12

Hi Anamika, Probiotics are helpful bacteria that make up our microbiome. They occur naturally in certain foods and also come in supplement form. Probiotics help replenish body’s “good bacteria.” Which then, in turn, helps with digestion, immune system function plus may help to treat or prevent certain diseases. Probiotics are helpful during diarrhoea or constipation—both of which are common for kids, It just tries to bring the digestion back to normal which may be disturbed during any intestinal infection/ condition. In addition, probiotics can help children already taking antibiotics, which also may cause stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea, and probiotics can ease these side effects. Probiotics are safe for kids. But since all probiotics work differently, hence its better talk to your doctor before starting with the supplementation. L-reuteri Probiotic has been known to give relief from colic and other digestion related issues. Hence, you can check with your doctor on the same. In addition, foods like prune puree, plum puree or pear puree work as natural laxatives. Give baby warm soups, and warm water more often and increase fibre by way of adding raw veggies, fruits and cereals like Ragi, oats or daliya. 2019-03-27 15:57:32

Hi Sneha lata, If the baby’s stomach appears to be bloated and hard then it could be related to some digestion related issues. This can happen if the baby’s gut is weak and gut is mainly made up of healthy and bad bacteria. If the count of Healthy bacteria has gone down then baby may experience digestion related symptoms. Probiotics help replenish body’s “good bacteria.” Which then, in turn, helps with digestion, immune system function plus may help to treat or prevent certain diseases. Probiotics are safe for kids. But since all probiotics work differently, hence its better talk to your doctor before starting with the supplementation. L-reuteri Probiotic has been known to give relief from colic and other digestion related issues. Hence, you can check with your doctor on the same. Regarding Night feed, offer small frequent feeds throughout the day as this will keep baby’s tummy full at night time also. Make sure the night feed is soft and made up of calming foods like banana, cereal, yoghurt or milk. At night if baby gets up offer milk or on some days try giving just water and see if baby is getting up for milk or he is scared and wanted to make sure that you are around. 2019-03-27 16:05:47

Hi Sneha, If after burping baby is spitting some food that is fine but if the baby is throwing out the entire food like vomit then its a matter of concern, in which case, please consult your doctor. 2019-03-27 16:07:03

Hi Puneesh, Colic is usually seen in babies from 2-4 weeks after birth and goes off by the time the baby is 5-6 months of age. Just been cranky or irritable does not indicate that the baby has Colic. Check if a baby is on teething or has any food allergy or is scared of the night and does not sleep well. 2019-03-27 16:15:58
