As parents, you will always want the best for your child – and so we like to make our children eat all the healthy foods. We ensure they have that daily glass of milk and eat their fruits. But this is a challenge most of the times – you serve up a healthy meal and your child just refuses to eat it!

How to ensure that your child is getting the essential nutrients for growth?

Well, as a parent you know that growth and nutrition go hand in hand. A balanced, healthy diet ensures that your child gets the essential nutrients required for his/her optimum growth. So, the best tactic is “patience” and also some “smartness”. Being smart parents means knowing what is meant by good nutrition for a growing child. Here are some useful pointers…

Most children get fussy about food as soon as they turn 3 (if not before!) – it’s around this time that they begin to discover the world of taste! So “fussiness” is actually a part of growing up. But your anxiety is normal too. You know only too well that a growing child needs nutrition – and that too, the right kind of nutrition. So, first and foremost equip yourself with the right knowledge about a growing child’s diet.

Make sure you coax him into eating healthy food. 1)Focus on the foods he likes. 2)Try to play around with those foods and add some other foods in a manner that he is not able to get the taste of the same. 3)Feed him in small intervals. 4)Do not try to force feed. 5)Even if at a time he eats 3-4tbsps its ok. 2017-11-07 17:08:17

Hi Sharad, Hope you are doing well. You eat to give everything to your child in moderation. 1)Give only about 4 almonds/cashews/pistas/walnuts in a day. 2)The best away to add the same is in the form of dry fruit powder mixed with milk. 3)Give him not more than 2 dates in a day. 4)Only dates are not enough to suffice his hunger. 5)Try feeding him in small quantities and especially when he is playing or busy in some activity. 6)Share stories with him talk to him while feeding. 7)Start his day with a glass of milk, followed by any fruit of his choice. 8)Give him small meals and do not expect him to eat like an adult :) 2017-11-07 17:12:15

my son is 4.2yrs .He is a foody, plz suggest what types of food should be given to increase his height and brain development. Hi Gargee.Hope you are doing good. Firstly the height of a child depends on his/her genes. You and me cannot determine it.However you can give them healthy foods. 1) If you are looking to keep his brain healthy, then fish, avocado, dried foods, nuts and seeds are a great option to go with. 2)His height will increase gradually only make sure that he is eating healthy. 3) You can give her veggies which she likes in the form of sabziz, sandwich, chillas, add it to poha, upma and so on. 4)For fruits and dairy to can make a smoothie, fruit yogurt parfait, milkshake and so on. 5)Occasionally you can make a juice out of her fav food. 6)Avoid any junk or outside food. 2017-11-07 17:24:04

Hi Komal, Hope you are doing good. 1)You can try giving her milkshakes with different fruits everyday. 2)Rather than milk,go for a yogurt based smoothie at time and simply add little milk to it while blending. 3)You can also add home-made nut powder (with almonds, walnuts, pistas) and little honey. 4)Make sure you give coffee only occasionally. 2017-11-07 17:29:16

Hi Meenu, 1) If your child is not willing to eat the entire food at a given time, then do not force him.Let him eat little if he is satisfied leave him.Never force feed your child. 2) Fruits you can feed when he is playing or studying.Do not puree it.Milkshakes are ok occasionally.Or you can make a parfait out of it. 3)Please remember if you are going to be behind your child all the time to feed food then he will end up becoming more fussy. The lesser the attention the better. 2017-11-07 17:39:19

Hi Jacintha, 1) Never force feed your child,it creates a negative impact about food. 2)Add veggis to khichdis/upma/chillas/poha/pulav/fried rice/whole wheat pasta. 3)Feed only little at a time,if she eats 2 tbsps and does not wish to eat more then do not force. 4)Let her eat in smaller intervals. 5)Also do not give her a phone, ipad or T.V if she isnt eating food. 2017-11-07 17:44:54

Hi Sangeeta, I would say firstly you need to calm down :) 1) Let your child eat as much as he wishes to at a given time.the more you try to force the more will he starts getting attention. 2)Give him least attention and let him ask for food when hungry. 2017-11-07 17:46:46

Hi my son is 3.7yrs old and doesn't like to eat food his weight is 14kg .he doesn't like any food so I want to know how to introduce different fruits to him.I have to force him to eat meals.sometimes he put the food in his mouth for hrs and try to pretend like vomiting so that food can threw away from his mouth especially he does this with the chapaties.his milk consumption is less than 1litre.he never likes cakes, biscuits whenever i gave him food he starts playing with the food.his favorite thing is toys like car, train he never get satisfied after every 2days he would ask for the new toy .he even don't like the outside food.

Hi Preeti, Hope you are doing well. 1)Never force feed your child. It creates a negative impact about food. 2)Introduce one food at a time and let him develop a liking for him. 3)Try and experiment with food by adding foods which he likes and even ones which he does not like. 4)Feed him very little food at a time and engage him in your talks, tell him stories, share your experience about something. 5)Preferably sit with him to have meals. 2017-11-07 17:50:51

Huda Shaikh
Hi Sameena, 1) It is completely ok if your son does not like spicy food. You can use minimal spices in his food and believe me he would not be deprived. 2)Where introducing new foods is concerned try and introduce one food at a time and see whether he is liking it or no.If he does not like it introduce it again after a week and see his reaction. You cannot force your child to eat anything, hence let him eat foods which he likes but make sure you try and push in foods which he does not by experimenting with different foods.Make something different out of it. 2017-11-07 18:00:25

Hi Eileen, 1) Never force feed your child it creates a negative impact about food. 2) TRy making different foods for her namely idlis/chillas/pancakes/uttapam/veggie khichi/veggie pulav/sandwiches/stir fry's and so on.Add like a twist to the normal meals. Sit together to have a meal and never feed your child separately. Talk to her ,share stories with her while feeding. You can give fruits when she is playing. Add nuts to her diet (walnuts/almonds)-4 in a day. 2 dates in the diet. Try feeding her little at a time and do not force. 2017-11-07 18:07:35

Hi Sharvari, 1) Feed her little food at a given interval,do not feed her too much in one go. 2) There are times when you need to wait for her till she asks for food. 3) For new foods introduce one at a given time,if she likes the taste go ahead and feed her more.In case she does not like it then reintroduce it after 1 week and then see hr reaction. Say no to T.V ,Phones and tablets. There are times when you need to give her less attention and do not be behind her for food.Be calm and everything shall fall in place. 2017-11-07 18:10:35

Hi Dr. My son is 4.4yrs old. I have not started him on any health drinks so far yet. Is it necessary to include health drinks like Horlicks, Pediasure, Complan, etc for a growing kid? How much does it contribute towards the healthy growth of a child? Please advise.

Hi Jaya, It is completely ok if you are not giving any health drinks to your child. It isn't necessary completely, depends on you. If your child drinks milk happily then go ahead with plain milk or at times you can add nuts powder or crushed nuts or make a milkshake out of it. The natural the better. 2017-11-07 18:12:27
