Do you know that when it comes to your child’s growth there are some factors that are in your control – and then there are certain things which are not! Growth in children, especially physical growth (height and weight), is a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors.

Your effort as a parent should be to provide your child with a healthy nourishing diet, an active lifestyle with adequate sleep, and a stable loving environment, so as to help your child grow to his/her full potential.

It is also important to track your child's growth.

The time when your child is transiting from being a preschooler to becoming a school-going child (and a few years after that, say from 3 to 9 years) is the time to watch your child’s growth closely.

It is important to monitor your child’s growth patterns for early detection of any growth disorder – and if your child does experience a growth delay, don’t panic! It is possible to help your child to catch up on lost growth.

Hi Geetanjali, What are you feeding her currently? Also is she a fussy eater? 2017-08-09 15:03:21

Dr. Vipul V Shandilya
You can give her foods rich in proteins like pulses, soy based products to help build her stamina. Also ensure that she gets a play time of 30 mins every day before gradually increasing to 1 hour. 2017-08-09 15:06:39

I would suggest you access IAP growth chart (Ht and Wt) for boys 0-5 yrs (use google search) and track your son's ht. and wt. using that chart. when he turns 5 yrs, switch to IAP chart 5-18 years. 2017-08-09 15:25:32

Horlicks growth plus is ok to give him right.. 2017-08-09 15:26:15

IAP stands for Indian academy of pediatrics. Alternatively you may also access WHO (World Health Organization) charts for boys 0-5 yrs 2017-08-09 15:29:32

hello dr. my son is one year old still he had not started to walk and have only two lower incisors.. he take less food nowadays. what to do??

Dr. Vipul V Shandilya
well, your son is still within the developmental window for walking. this means you can still wait for some more time. If he is not able to walk after 6 months, please visit a developmental pediatrician. About his feeding issues, he is in the weaning age and you should continuously encourage him to take healthy food. Sometimes, it is prudent to visit a pediatrician especially if he cries at the sight of food or while he it taking food. 2017-08-09 15:42:30

Hi Teena, you have not mentioned the weight of your daughter. weight gain could be a concern in young girls like your daughter. More so if she is becoming obese as a result of this weight gain. Excess weight gain could be because of fat deposition in the body due to various reasons. I would suggest that you minimise the consumption of fatty foods and junk calories in the diet of your daughter. Also you could consider consulting a dietitian who could guide you to healthier food options for your daughter. Try to avoid obesogenic supplements and switch to non-obesogenic supplements if required. 2017-08-09 15:35:25

At 10 years your daughter is above the 90th centile but below the 95th centile for weight at age. This is a good sign. Just ensure that she continues to consume healthy food and avoid fatty and oily food of junk food with junk calories as that can lead to various health issues in your girls. 2017-08-09 15:39:06

Dr. Vipul V Shandilya
fortunately, your son is still above the 50th centile in terms of weight for age. However, not gaining weight for 10 months during this period of growth should be a concern. Have you done deworming? If not I would suggest you do that. And if the problem persists, please visit your pediatrician. 2017-08-09 15:45:28

Dr. Vipul V Shandilya
It is advisable to give at least one serving of fresh fruits and tree nuts each to your child. Also try to limit the consumption of junk food as that can actually limit the amount of micronutrients available through the diet. 2017-08-09 15:53:17

This should be ideally calculated by a dietician on the basis of the activity level. I would suggest that you limit the intake of junk calories and encourage her to take healthy food and nutritional supplements. 2017-08-09 16:03:48

good afternoon! Your son seems to be doing fine in terms of both height and weight as both are within normal range. Please continue to give the normal healthy food that you must already be giving. Should you wish to, you may also give him some healthy nutritional supplement. 2017-08-09 16:24:03

I would suggest that you start the supplement that you have mentioned and also focus on providing healthy and nutritious diet. You can still wait for some time as far as the need for GH checking is concerned. 2017-08-09 16:14:55
