My 11 month old daughter (weight 9kg) has suddenly stopped drinking formula. She would previously have 10-12 oz through the day with two feeds of breastmilk (one at night and one early in the morning). Now it's just the breastmilk twice. Is that ok? She's a poor eater otherwise as well.

This phenomenon happens quite frequently and should be considered as a passing phase. I am sure that she will soon again start drinking her formula. At her age the emphasis should be more on semi solids/solid foods like cereals, rice, vegetables, and fruits and maybe once a day soft easily chewable snacks. If se consumes milk two to three times a day will be sufficient. 2015-05-30 11:01:19

Pls find below her diet: 10:00-10:30am - mixture of all cereals-pulses, ragi n dry fruits cooked in 300 ml of full cream milk. 1:30-2:00 pm -daal n rice wid lil vegetable (but not much in quantity). 5:30-6:00pm - 1 fruit n 1 juice extracted at home. 8:00-8:30 - 100 ml full cream milk 10:00 pm - khichri mixture wid d paste of vegetables including beat root, palak, patato, n 3-4 more seasonal vegetables. Dr. Ranjan Kumar
There is no short and sure answer to your long question. The diet which you are providing to your baby seems complete and balanced. Her weight of 11 kilos for an age of 15 months is above average. This should re assure you that you are doing the things in a right way. Babies, who are very active during the day, sometimes do tend to have interrupted sleep. Given the current weather I am sure she feels quite thirsty and hence wakes up looking for something to drink. 2015-05-30 11:02:47

Toothpastes tend to have a strong smell and taste especially for a baby whose tastes it for the first time. I suggest that you start using very small quantities to begin with. There are toothpastes exclusively meant for infants and children. I hope you know about Himalaya’s Sparking white toothpaste which is totally natural, safe and perhaps tasty. 2015-05-30 11:03:48

It would have been easier for me comment on his weight if you had given me his birth weight. But as you righty said if he is active, energetic and gaining weight (even though slowly) you should be happy. Adding high calorie foods like butter, cheese and ghee as and when possible would help in gaining weight. 2015-05-30 11:04:35

My 11 month old would stop eating on a fine day and would feel irritable while accepting her meals. She isn't a fussy eater as such but on such days she won't like to have her food. But she is active and playful on such days as well. Is this a normal phenomenon or does this happen with my baby? I get worried about her this behavior. Would it affect her health? Kindly advise. Regards.

As long as your daughter is generally eating well most of the days, gaining weight, active, energetic and sleeps well, please do not worry about her having occasional bad days with regards to eating. 2015-05-30 11:23:04

Your baby girl's weight gain is normal. A baby gains anywhere between 125-200 gms /week in the first few months of life. Your baby is probably contented and that is why not crying. Thumb sucking is a habit which is not directly related to hunger. There are many aspects to it as a new born baby does not have binocular vision they tend squint during the first few months. As long as the stool is semi solid and yellow you need not worry. 2015-05-30 11:08:23

As we all know, breast milk is the best. you can express your milk and keep in in the fridge up to 6 hours. People at home can take it out, let it stand till it reaches room temperature and feed it. 2015-05-30 11:18:20

Hello, my baby is 13 months old, he is breastfeed till now, dislike outside milk, I give him outer milk in form of banana shake and mango shake. My question is that is mother's milk is harmful for him, does he will reduce his weight from my milk, because my baby's doctor advised me to discontinue feeding him my milk as it will be harmful for him. My baby's weight is 10 kgs and height is 73.5cms. Thanks

Dr. Ranjan Kumar
Mother's milk is never harmful to the baby. What your doctor meant was only mother's milk in the second year of life in not enough. He should receive solids, vegetables, fruits. 2015-05-30 11:11:58

His weight and height are appropriate. Please note, that he has not decreased in weight, probably his rate of weight gain has decreased. 2015-05-30 11:12:39

Dr. Ranjan Kumar
Please do not get worried. All milestones have a range in which they have to be achieved, not one particular date. Your son can roll over anytime until he is 9 months. the diet which you are giving him seems to be fine for the time being. 2015-05-30 11:15:55

His current weight can be validated only if you give his birth weight. He has to have 2-3 semisolid feeds per day and introduction of vegetables and fruits. 2015-05-30 11:21:18

Dr. Ranjan Kumar
17 month old baby will watch TV and listen to the mobile for visual and auditory stimulation. There is no way the content can impact her. I think it is too early to think of routine for your baby. 2015-05-30 11:24:30

Dr. Ranjan Kumar
It is Ok if she does not sleep after feed but is she crancky and crying? which means she needs more. Normally babies hold neck firmly around 6 months of age. rubbing of face and eyes could be due to irritation or behavior. there is no need to give gripe water to the baby. 2015-05-30 11:27:24

Solid food has to be started at 6 months of age. It could vary from home made ragi saree to one of the many commercially available foods. I suggest start once a day in the morning, make it twice and slowly increase gradually. 2015-05-30 11:30:12

2 yrs is generally the time suggested to gradually stop breast feeding. She now requires more of solids, vegetables and fruits. Please remember creating fuss while eating is a mode of entertainment for the baby! 2015-05-30 11:34:02
