What are the pros and cons of each board?
What are the pros and cons of each board?

Nitin
Hi Divya!
There are multiple differences between various education boards.
On a quick basis, while CBSE is academically inclined, ICSE is academics and collaboration through projects, IB is more focused on exploration based learning staggered across subjects. I also recommend you to read this Blog where I have answered these in much detail.

here's the link : http://www.parentune.com/parenting-blog/icse-cbse-ib-choose-the-right-board-for-your-child/448
2015-08-19 10:59:03

Nitin
While most of the competitive exams like medical, engineering are alligned to CBSE syllabus, ICSE syllabus is similar as well, with minor changes between grades. IB on the other hand has a very different syllabus and curriculum, which is not alligned to the competitive exams in the country.
2015-08-19 11:00:32

Nitin
Feel free to ask a follow up question on this in case of query.
2015-08-19 11:00:51

What is the age criteria for each board? The child should be of what age when he reaches class 10? My son is 12 years and in class 8 CBSE school. Is he eligible for his Class 10 or will I have to make him repeat Class 8?

Nitin
Hi Kavita!
2015-08-19 11:01:08

Nitin
Even within boards, there are different age criterions for the entry age. Say for e.g. Delhi has it at 3 years as minimum at academic session start, Mumbai & B’lor have 3 years and 6 months, B’lor even has 3 years and 8months in some schools. It’s good that you are thinking ahead for 10th. For grade 10, there is a minimum and maximum age definition as per CBSE. These are 14 years as minimum and 16 years at maximum. So if your child is 14 years or more in grade 10, would be eligible to appear, in case not then, shall do a grade twice.
2015-08-19 11:01:38

Nitin
In such a case if he falls short, then, it would be better to repeat grade 8 and let him use the year on building blocks of key concepts in his interest areas and subjects.
2015-08-19 11:02:35

Nitin
Also, icse is flexible and doesn't have an age limit in most of the schools. Some of the schools though follow 14 as the floor and 16 as the ceiling there too.
2015-08-19 11:04:12

Nitin
CBSE and ICSE both have alligned syllabus, though the NDA exam has a distribution of content from grade 8,9,10 more than ggrade 11 and 12, over the last few years.
2015-08-19 11:05:33

Nitin
between the two CBSE is more alligned to NDA entrance, but ICSE is not far off. on the other hand NDA has SSB, in which they focus on the alround personality. there ICSE board has got advantages over CBSE
2015-08-19 11:06:30

Nitin
most welcome
2015-08-19 11:06:53

Nitin
all the best! :)
2015-08-19 11:06:57

I am currently looking for Nursery admission for my kid, can you guide me which board will best suite him for his holistic development.

Nitin
hi Shweta!
2015-08-19 11:07:18

Nitin
Could you elaborate a bit on holistic development bit, so that I can suggest you accordingly
2015-08-19 11:07:46

Nitin
ok, so as I understand you are looking at options with a balance of learning as well as beyond learning - physical development, cognitive development, extra currics. right?
2015-08-19 11:09:52

Nitin
While CBSE is tagged with the "rote" learning approach, they are making ammends to change it. like they have now got the "coscholastics" assessment in their system as well.
2015-08-19 11:10:59

Nitin
having said that, long way to go before it gets well implemented
2015-08-19 11:11:16

Nitin
ICSE right from the beginning has been a mix between academics along with the projects-based approach, which fosters collaborative learning.
2015-08-19 11:11:59

Nitin
I can help you with differences shweta :)
2015-08-19 11:12:16

Nitin
you would know the best to choose between them
2015-08-19 11:12:29

Nitin
Then comes in IB
2015-08-19 11:12:42

Nitin
IB focuses on fostering exploration and wonder at early ages, with seemingly lesser focus on academics as such, especially in comparison to the other boards.
2015-08-19 11:13:14

Nitin
This helps the child in the wonder-years, to explore surroundings.
2015-08-19 11:13:44

Nitin
having said that, even IB has been criticised over the years for missing out academics/learning milesones, and then suddenly over-burdening the child in senior classes
2015-08-19 11:14:23

Nitin
I understand what you mean, and so feel that you could explore beyond boards, more into each school to make an informed decision.
2015-08-19 11:15:03

Nitin
In gurgaon, Heritage is a good example of a school which follows these two areas well.
2015-08-19 11:15:36

Nitin
There's shikshantar too, an off late Shiv Nadar is trying to build themselves in this direction. still a long way to see implementation though
2015-08-19 11:16:16

Nitin
Academically, they have been criticised in the past for senior grades like grade 10 onwards, but they have improved considerably since then
2015-08-19 11:16:48

Nitin
You could also look at exploring scottish high
2015-08-19 11:17:06

Nitin
These 3 are closer to what you have in mind for your child
2015-08-19 11:17:27

Nitin
True, they also have IGCSE later
2015-08-19 11:17:43

Nitin
But most importantly, visit all the three, speak to a few fellow parents whose chlldren are going to these schools and get the latest on them.
2015-08-19 11:18:35

Nitin
It's an international board, also called the cambridge board losely
2015-08-19 11:19:00

Nitin
not really, more importantly it should fit well to your criterions, beyond board in this case
2015-08-19 11:19:46

Nitin
check these 3 out in Gurgaon, and whet with fellow parents, you could even connect with parents on the community, and get their opinion
2015-08-19 11:20:15

Nitin
am sure you would choose the right one :)
2015-08-19 11:20:37

Nitin
its alright, not the best though
2015-08-19 11:20:59

Nitin
sure, feel free to ask me a follow up question here, shall try to answer
2015-08-19 11:21:19

Nitin
i won't recommend any one, don't endorse any one of them, i think the parent knows the best for her child. that is you. :)
2015-08-19 11:21:50

Nitin
I can help you choose
2015-08-19 11:22:08

Nitin
all the best shweta!
2015-08-19 11:22:15

Are there CBSE affiliated schools with modern learning approach methods ( similar to IB board approach) in Delhi/NCR.

Nitin
hi neha!
2015-08-19 11:22:37

Nitin
CBSE and IB are very different in their approach neha, so none which are simila to each other.
2015-08-19 11:23:16

Nitin
If you see my recent answers to shweta's questions, you would get a drift.
2015-08-19 11:23:40

Nitin
It's not near the other 3 i mentioned
2015-08-19 11:24:07

Nitin
is all I would say
2015-08-19 11:24:13

Nitin
New school, heavily marketed/advertised, and trying to get there is what i would say
2015-08-19 11:24:35

Nitin
too early to say about it's outcomes
2015-08-19 11:25:01

Nitin
holistic development - like shweta defined, right?
2015-08-19 11:25:31

Nitin
and in delhi or gurgaon?
2015-08-19 11:25:47

Nitin
then I would say the same options as last one
2015-08-19 11:26:06

Nitin
Delhi - Mothers international, vasant valley, tagore are good options on those lines
2015-08-19 11:26:41

Nitin
IB schools are the most expensive schools in terms of fees
2015-08-19 11:27:22

Nitin
so there is a certain disposable income group which goes for these
2015-08-19 11:27:34

Nitin
it's true that these are better off and slightly upper income group audience. so it's not about the school so much but more about the societal/income group differences
2015-08-19 11:28:17

Nitin
that's driven by the parents
2015-08-19 11:28:30

Nitin
on the "meek" bit, a child could be equally meek or strong at any of the boards, it's not so much about the board, it's more about the environment and child's personal preferences
2015-08-19 11:29:09

Nitin
IB early years are more focused on exploration, and not so academically inclined as so it's thought that it's an easy going board, but if you look at the Diploma prgram (grade 11, 12 equivallent), i would rate it as tough or even tougher than any other board
2015-08-19 11:30:05

Nitin
I don't think so Neha
2015-08-19 11:30:16

Nitin
basis the facts, and the orientation board is not what would make the child meek or strong anyways
2015-08-19 11:30:51

Nitin
hope this helps
2015-08-19 11:31:03

Nitin
In case you are looking at IB as an option, you could look at Pathways, american school
2015-08-19 11:31:36

Nitin
likewise neha
2015-08-19 11:31:40

Nitin
all the best! :)
2015-08-19 11:31:45

Which board is more interactive and encourages co-curricular activities?
Which board is more interactive and encourages co-curricular activities?

Nitin
Hey neha!
2015-08-19 11:32:04

Nitin
IB the most in early years (PYP program)
2015-08-19 11:32:23

Nitin
great neha, am running slow :)
2015-08-19 11:32:35

Nitin
how old is your child?
2015-08-19 11:33:15

Nitin
ok
2015-08-19 11:33:27

Nitin
if the chage of board happens within early years/classes it is normally not such a challenge, it becomes difficult for the child post grade 6/7
2015-08-19 11:34:29

Nitin
preschools are board agnostic, so not really
2015-08-19 11:34:45

Nitin
but yes, preschool helps parents asses the kind of school they would like for their child
2015-08-19 11:35:04

Nitin
is she going to the preschool?
2015-08-19 11:35:13

Nitin
normally 18 months is good as an entry age, but provided the child is able to speak a little, ask for water, food, help, to go to toilet.
2015-08-19 11:36:14

Nitin
That's great then
2015-08-19 11:36:23

Nitin
You could start evaluating preschools for her
2015-08-19 11:36:35

Nitin
You could even start with a mother-toddler program in case you/your partner has time
2015-08-19 11:36:58

Nitin
there are several good ones in gurgaon, in fact a lot of them are good
2015-08-19 11:37:11

Nitin
mother-toddler programs are where the parent and child can go together and spend time together around concepts, learning, socializing, clay-play, flash-cards and so on
2015-08-19 11:38:26

Nitin
and it can start as early as 1 year and 2 months
2015-08-19 11:38:41

Nitin
there are
2015-08-19 11:38:49

Nitin
some of the options in gurgaon to look at are
2015-08-19 11:38:58

Nitin
pallavan, intellitots, pathways
2015-08-19 11:39:17

Nitin
on criterions, please see this page http://www.parentune.com/Pre-Schools-Ranking
2015-08-19 11:39:55

Nitin
the rankings are last year, so won't be updated, but the criterions are handy
2015-08-19 11:40:15

Nitin
use these to assess the preschools, visit them and spend at least 45 minutes in the preschool to get a sense
2015-08-19 11:40:36

Nitin
:)
2015-08-19 11:40:40

Nitin
all the best neha!
2015-08-19 11:40:45

My son is in 8th standard in ICSE board. I have realised that the ICSE students are so much under pressure with so many books but ultimately they compete with low standard boards while in the 10th standard. They score good marks but still not considered for better colleges. Are there any good colleges for them after 10th? and which?

Nitin
Hi shweta! I understand your concern
2015-08-19 11:41:21

Nitin
Mumbai is attuned to the ICSE results, have you encountered otherwise?
2015-08-19 11:42:33

Nitin
unless you are looking at colleges in other cities as well for graduation, like Delhi
2015-08-19 11:42:55

Nitin
Mumbai, B'lor , Jaipur are places which give at par consideration to ICSE passouts, at par with other boards
2015-08-19 11:43:39

Nitin
and what was the challenge?
2015-08-19 11:44:02

Nitin
challenge - i mean why could he not get through?
2015-08-19 11:44:50

Nitin
OK, now i got it, the state board results being touching the roof in % visavis ICSE, which has a different assessment approach
2015-08-19 11:45:39

Nitin
did i get it right?
2015-08-19 11:45:54

Nitin
All colleges in that sense shweta would be open to ICSE passouts
2015-08-19 11:46:21

Nitin
now comes in the question of benchmarking.
2015-08-19 11:46:32

Nitin
so the good ones are already doing that, they look at ICSE and state board results differently and they don't mix the two, just that, there would be other criterions as well, like extra curics/ any scholarships / coscholatics. If the child has those interests, then it adds well.
2015-08-19 11:47:55

Nitin
also, in case of junior college, there is a benchmarking by board, and not across boards.
2015-08-19 11:48:29

Nitin
IB board - diploma program (grade 11, 12 equivallent) is in line with the international syllabus, especially in the US/UK, and hence does have an advantage, especially in case where ther IB school has a tie up of sorts with the international univ
2015-08-19 11:49:51

Nitin
hope this helps, all the best!
2015-08-19 11:49:58

What are the options after 12th for students from IGCSE?
What are the options after 12th for students from IGCSE?

Nitin
hi! same as any other board
2015-08-19 11:50:20

Nitin
but added/easier to tie up options with international univs especially
2015-08-19 11:50:50

Nitin
which grade?
2015-08-19 11:51:12

Nitin
Which grade is your child now?
2015-08-19 11:51:35

Nitin
which board?
2015-08-19 11:52:05

Nitin
and why do you want to change his board?
2015-08-19 11:52:22

Nitin
You want to go for IGCSE?
2015-08-19 11:52:45

Nitin
The advantage is mainly because the syllabus and the approach is in sync with International Univs. IN that case IB would be better than IGCSE
2015-08-19 11:53:23

Nitin
in case the idea is to go abroad (US, europe) for higher studies
2015-08-19 11:53:43

Nitin
otherwise, even a CBSE passout can appear in a SAT exam and score well to enter one of these univs
2015-08-19 11:54:15

Nitin
hope that helps
2015-08-19 11:54:58

Nitin
you mean ICSE or IGCSE?
2015-08-19 11:55:15

Nitin
the two are different?
2015-08-19 11:55:20

Nitin
the two are not the same i mean
2015-08-19 11:55:26

Nitin
one is a delhi based Indian board and the other (IGCSE) is cambridge board
2015-08-19 11:55:47

Nitin
in case you were to change a board, i would advice to go for it asap, try and not change the board beyond this year.
2015-08-19 11:56:19

Nitin
as your child is already in grade 7, or else it would become highly challenging for him to adjust.
2015-08-19 11:56:40

Nitin
even now, it won't be easy
2015-08-19 11:56:45

Nitin
most welcome mahalakshmi! all the best!
2015-08-19 11:57:22

Nitin
hi shweta!
2015-08-19 11:57:39

Nitin
did not understand the question
2015-08-19 11:57:45

Nitin
please do ask another one
2015-08-19 11:58:06

Nitin
i shall answer the other query by then
2015-08-19 11:58:14

Which board is suitable for a child who is a kinesthetic learner and learns through experience?
Which board is suitable for a child who is a kinesthetic learner and learns through experience?

Nitin
Hi!
2015-08-19 11:58:26

Nitin
Great to read this question
2015-08-19 11:58:36

Nitin
my congratulations to you to have taken this approach to your child's learning
2015-08-19 11:59:08

Nitin
really, so good to read this
2015-08-19 11:59:19

Nitin
a Kinesthetic learner needs two key things apart from others to foster her learning
2015-08-19 11:59:54

Nitin
freedom of movement, an open area to learn and a lot of resource material to try various approaches
2015-08-19 12:00:25

Nitin
DMIT is an indicative, reasonably ok test
2015-08-19 12:00:48

Nitin
so thats a good indicator
2015-08-19 12:00:54

Nitin
so essentially, an environment conducive to exploration - both inside the classroom as well as outside
2015-08-19 12:01:39

Nitin
library and experiential sessions with mentors is a key to such learners
2015-08-19 12:02:00

Nitin
basis these two criterions, CBSE may not be the most preferred
2015-08-19 12:02:26

Nitin
IB has a focus on creating stimualting surroundings with resource material to foster exploration, especially right from the early years, even the concepts are introduced in that manner, so it scores over other boards in this case
2015-08-19 12:03:43

Nitin
CBSE is trying to implement that, but is not successful, not as yet
2015-08-19 12:04:05

Nitin
thats true, it has coscholastic assessment now, but the implementation can be much better
2015-08-19 12:04:30

Nitin
wheras, IB has this as an integral part of their approach, and so it scores better on these 2 parameters over other boards
2015-08-19 12:05:04

Nitin
ICSE is better than CBSE in these though
2015-08-19 12:05:21

Nitin
so, clearly the choice is between ICSE, IGCSE and IB in that sense
2015-08-19 12:05:39

Nitin
SIS (singapore international), Ecole Mondeal, Dhirubhai Ambani, Oberoi International, Hiranandani are some good options there
2015-08-19 12:06:44

Nitin
Hope that helps. All the best! :)
