Weaning Foods: What To Introduce And When!

Thinking of moving beyond breast milk to solid foods? The transition from breast milk to solid foods is known as weaning. Weaning may start when the baby is around 6 months or post 6 months when the baby is entering his/ her seventh month. While you may be excited about starting the weaning process, your baby may take time to adjust to the process. Want to do it while keeping the baby happy? Yes, it's possible!

When is the right time to wean?

This is probably the next big question on your mind. In general, it's advisable to start weaning your baby off breast milk after 6 months. You baby's digestive system will give you signs and clues that they are ready to go onto the weaning journey. Some typical signs such as your baby is able to crawl, is rolling over, can hold his/her head upright can do some eye-hand-mouth coordination and is able to swallow. Babies who aren't ready to start the process yet will push the food out of their mouth.

Precautions you should take while starting the process

  • The food you are giving your baby should have a smooth in texture. There should be no chunks in the meal as chunks may lead to choking

  • The food should be at room temperature

  • Try using a spoon instead of a bottle as this will prevent tooth decay

Which foods to introduce when?

Once your baby is 6-months-old, you can start giving mashed vegetable and fruits or purees. Vegetables like carrot, pumpkin, sweet potato and fruits like banana, apples make for yummy meals for babies. The next stage is to give your baby mashed food of thicker consistency. Try and avoid adding salts, sugar, honey to your baby's food. If your baby is happy eating with spoon and is able to digest the food you are giving, try and increase the range of food you give.

Hi, usually solids are introduced at 6 months of age. If your baby appears ready for them, start with lentil/moong dal water initially...and move to sooji kheer , pureed apple etc. Make the consistency quite sloppy. 2019-02-25 14:59:22

hi Nazeem, once your baby is ready to wean to solids start with soft mashed foods. Continue with milk as before as initially the quantities are small . you will be able to find a diet plan on the parentune website. Essentially, you start with foods like mashed banana, stewed apple, moong dal paani, rice kheer etc without added salt/sugar. Introduce a next new food after 3 days to know if they tolerate it well. Initially it may be only 1 tablespoon once at lunch and then by next 2-3 days go up to 2-3 meals a day. Keep the consistency sloppy. Hope this is useful. 2019-02-25 15:10:26

Hi Priyamit, some babies do take long..upto a year at times to cut teeth. Please continue to give him vitamin D as would have been prescribed by your doctor. Teething process seems to have started as he is drooling so much. Not all cold require medication so do get him examined by your doctor if the symptoms are persisting.Take care ! 2019-02-25 15:14:28

Hi ayesha, if your baby has taken well to weaning foods you can now introduce new ones now. For example you may give fruits like pear, melon and small quantity of citrus fruits (should not be sour). vegetable slike cauliflower, turnip can be added. If he/she is picking small things with hands, then finger foods like pieces of soft chapatti etc can be given. Egg and chicken is ok to give too. Hope this has been useful ! 2019-02-25 15:26:46

HI Benazeer, solid food and water may be stated at 6 months of age. some babies seem ready at 5 month when initially moong dal paani, rice water etc are given. Then sooji kheer, mashed banana , pureed apple and pear can start. Usually after a small solid feed, 1-2 spoonful of water may be given. 2019-02-25 15:34:50

HI Kalpana, if the baby has weaned well to the initial solids offered, you can now introduce different fruits and vegetables. you may now give less mashed or soft cubed vegetables such as cauliflower, pumpkin etc. citus fruits may be given in small quantity. Egg, chicken and vegetable soup is fine to give. Rice dal, khichri with vegetables in it is also a wholesome meal. The consistency now gets coarser and the quantity also increases. HI Maria, if your breast milk is sufficient then its not necessary to give formula milk at all. If you are still keen to do so, start with a small amount of feed once a day initially. If you find that each time there is vomiting and discomfort then you may need to stop temporarily /change the type of milk Take care! 2019-02-25 15:45:33

Hi Rida, are you giving her any other milk then.. if not, you may give her some milk products like yogurt, paneer cubes etc everyday. Also ensure plenty of water and juices if she is prone to constipation. To her regular diet, add foods that are calorie dense and nutritious like khichri with mashed vegetables in it, milk and banana/apple shakes, chicken broth and egg if you eat meat. Finger foods like stuffed parantha pieces, washed and boiled vegetable sticks etc may be given. Please refer to the parentune website for help with specific diet charts. Hope this has been useful! 2019-02-25 15:53:01

hi, keep up with breastfeeding and putting the baby to latch on regularly as the reflex drives milk production . You must eat well and drink adequately to stay well hydrated. Your gynaecologist may be able to prescribe some medication, also there are now lactation experts in most hospitals that can help. Take care ! 2019-02-25 15:19:41

Hi Sukanta, a healthy nutritious diet will help in overall health and brain development. in particular, fish and eggs are a good source of protein. also give lentils, green vegetables and fruits on a daily basis. 2019-02-25 15:56:41

hi Rida, you can try any of the other 6-12 month baby formula...though they are somewhat similar. Try to tackle constipation instead with more water, soup and juice. at 1 year, cows milk can be introduced. Can be given slowly in small quantity before that also if no other milk is being tolerated. 2019-02-25 15:59:56
