Hi Charu, you need to increase his fluids. So increase his milk intake, plain water, fresh fruit juice- it could be pomegranate, pineapple, apple. Take care that the juice is not sour. 2015-10-31 10:31:51

You also give him vegetable soup especially green leafy soup. It should be well sieved and can be given in milk.Give him porridge (suji/rice flakes), mashed boiled potatoes with vegetables like carrot, gourd, pumpkin. You may also add half or one spoon of ghee/oil. Do take advice of your paediatrician also. 2015-10-31 10:34:19

My son is 4 months old now and exclusively breastfed. I have a feeling that he doesn't get enough milk because he is not gaining much weight. He is only 4.3 kgs now and his birth weight was 2.3 kgs. Moreover he wants frequent feeds .Should i start on weaning foods or should i start on formula as a substitute. Im confused.

Hi Aanchal, your son's weight seems fine according to his birth weight. ideally a baby should double his birth weight by 5 months. This would be a weight of 4.6 kgs for your son at 5 months 2015-10-31 10:39:18

You need to take care of your diet too. eat a balanced diet consisting off enough pulses (like whole beans, legumes, dals), milk products (curd, paneer. cheese), egg/poultry/fish (if no vegetarian habits), dried fruits (dates, raisins, apricots, figs), nuts, seeds (flaxseeds, sesame)etc. 2015-10-31 10:40:18

Still if you feel that milk is not enough you may take paediatrician's advice on starting a top feed. 2015-10-31 10:41:09

If it is your feed then, feed as frequently as the baby demands. For formula milk you may feed about 750-850 ml (total) in a day. 2015-10-31 10:44:11

Hi Rashi, she is not underweight. ideally a healthy baby doubles her birth weight by 5 months, which she has. By one year she should triple her birth weight that would be around 8.7 kgs. 2015-10-31 10:46:37

Hi Ayushi, Mung dhuli is best tolerated and easily digestible dal. For such a small baby use this dal only and gradually you may introduce other dals. You may add it to well cooked vegetables or mashed potato or to thin khichri. 2015-10-31 11:16:17

Other options are dalia, porridge, mashed banana, fruit juice, veggie soup, curds etc. 2015-10-31 11:17:30

Hi Surabhi, it has soy extract so if your child is not allergic to soy, you Hi may give him with milk and add some nuts powder over it to add to its nutritional value. You may check for any allergy/digestibility issue by giving a little amount first and then if he can take it easily without any complain, continue with it. 2015-10-31 11:21:30

Hi Mehak, it is okay if she is taking 100 ml/ feed, if in the entire day she takes around 600-700 ml.you may start with few spoons and gradually increase the amount according to baby's acceptance. Start with one weaning/solid food in a day and you increase to twice a day. 2015-10-31 11:32:05

Puja Vasisht
Hi Rashi, Bread is made up of maida or refined flour which is not very healthy. You may choose a whole grain bread or rather whole grain cereals. Cheese slice though is a good source of protein and calcium, it is a processed food and high in salt. So you may limit amount of these. Coconut water is a good source of minerals. It is high in potassium (an electrolyte and a diuretic) but it should not be given in very high amounts. 2015-10-31 11:33:06
