1. Hina, Now is the time to lay right foundation for eating and other good habits. As for his nutritional needs ensure he is eating a well balanced diet including vegetables, fruits, cereals, pulses, eggs, fish, chicken and enough water. He should now be eating meals with family. This would ensure he is accepting family food more readily. 2015-07-08 14:30:42

Hi Puja My son turned one on 15th May this year. I have a couple of questions- 1. How to introduce cow's milk? Should we give full fat milk or toned milk? 2. How to give nuts such as almonds, pistachios? 3. Is it safe to give vegetables like- mushrooms, bell peppers, zucchini? 4. Need tips for food during travel. Is it OK to give packaged baby food such as Heinz? What are easy to make recipes during travel? Any must have food or supplement or medicine during travel?

2. For a healthy child cow’s milk is not to be diluted. However, if it needs to be diluted mix it with boiled water in 3:1 ratio. For children upto 2 years of age full fat milk should be given if no other problem. Nuts are best powdered and given to the children. If no known allergy, these vegetables can be given, well cooked and mashed, if the child has not started chewing. While travelling use powdered milk because fresh milk may have hygiene problem. If going for a shorter duration you may use packaged products. However, if the stay is longer, it would be better if home cooked food is given. So make the arrangements accordingly. Keep some biscuits, roasted & ground cereals , nuts along with local fresh fruits. 2015-07-08 14:34:53

For calcium needs of your son, please concentrate on good sources of calcium like milk & its products like cheese, paneer, curd. Also sesame seeds and ragi cereal are a good source of it. Ensure enough vitamin D through food sources such as fatty fish, egg yolk, butter, ghee for better absorption of calcium. 2015-07-08 14:39:15

She needs to have proteins from good sources like eggs, lean meats, fish, milk & products, dals & legumes Calcium from milk & products, Vitamin A from green leafy vegetables, yellow & orange coloured fruits & vegetables, palm oil, egg yolk etc. For iron essential in this stage, whole grains like bajra, bengal gram, soybean, green leafy vegetables would provide in ample. 2015-07-08 14:45:53

Hi Puja, can you please give a vegetarian meal plan for 14 months child? Is feeding normal Eggs safe or Organic is the only option? I am apprehensive to introduce to the non-organic eggs as we hear so much about artificial hormones being injected. Also, how to transition from Milk Powder to Cow's milk? Home remedies when the child doesn't go potty for 2 days or more although he is eating fruits/veggies/protein etc in his daily diet.

After one year of age, if there is no known allergy to egg white, it can be given safely. You may use organic if available. 2015-07-08 14:48:19

You can start with one feed of cow's milk and gradually give all feeds from cow's milk. 2015-07-08 14:50:09

Hi Puja.. My son is just above 2 years old and overall active. I have a few questions a) His daily breakfast (mostly) is a stuff parantha mostly paneer parantha, dal parantha or alu parantha. Is it okay? He really loves his parantha's but I'm concerned that these are fried (in desi ghee) .. but then some say that Kids can digest this all? Second - I want to ensure he gets his DHA and Omega 3 . The only nuts he likes is cashews and sometimes pista. He doesn't eat walnuts and no fish. Is there any other way of providing these supplements? I recently started using canola oil - is that good? I also saw things like bournvita are DHA enriched, should I initiate bournvita in is diet at this age? - Are apples only winter fruits and should not be given in summers? They say these are cold storage apples and hence should not be given - I am not giving any supplements iron/calcium . I only give vitamin d quarterly. Please suggest quick ways to give iron as I feel he may not be getting enough of that (no spinach, no meat) Thanks!
