What to Do If Frequent Blocked Nose Occur in Your Child?

Did you know that there can be many reasons for a blocked nose? Yes – your child catching a cold or flu due to season change is the most frequent cause for the blocked nose but it’s not the only one! Another common cause for nasal congestion is an allergy triggered by pollen, dust, or even a pet (especially if your child’s nose itches or if s/he has watery or itchy eyes).

Do you know why the nose gets blocked?

While you know by experience “what” causes a blocked nose (infection/cold/flu or an allergy and there could be other serious factors such as polyps in the nose due to an infected sinus or structural abnormalities due to a childhood injury etc.) do you exactly “why” the nose gets blocked?

Here’s why: A blocked nose occurs when the tissues lining the nose become swollen due to the inflamed blood vessels. In younger children, nasal congestion is a more common condition since their nasal passages are very tiny and get blocked easily – making breathing difficult.

Oh yes! A blocked nose can be very discomforting…

It can cause breathing difficulties or noisy/ jerky breathing. Your child will feel tired and lethargic. It can lead to sleep disturbances and you will often notice your child sleeping with his/her mouth open. It can even cause feeding difficulties in toddlers.

So what can you do to ease a blocked nose?

Take a doctor’s opinion. You don’t have to struggle through your child’s sleepless nights or listless days. Know the relief and treatment options – and most importantly, get advice on “what remedy/treatment to try in what situation” – so you can bring effective and prompt relief to your child. If your child has recurrent episodes of blocked nose that are not related to season change/cold/flu, then it’s all the more important to identify other issues and decide on the right course of treatment.

hi, Its not a worry..adenoids are tissues that often swell up and block the nasal passage . if the symptoms are severe, persistent with frequent ear infections/tonsillitis / disturbed sleep etc - then surgery may be needed. most children otherwise get treated for the episodes, take a longer term anti allergic also and gradually grow out of them around 8-10 years or so. its a fairly common problem and you can wait and watch for a bit to get a better idea of his symptoms and severity and discuss with your doctor accordingly. 2017-09-28 16:18:11

hi Dimple, all colds and cough may not need antibiotics. Use allopathic medicines when acute flare ups. also, read through the blog on this site about home remedies and see if they are helpful . 2017-09-28 16:20:20

hi Arika, she seems to have low immunity although this season the viral fevers are many and frequent for most kids. YOu woudl need to work on her diet too - vitamins and protein rich on a daily basis. if needed, supplementation with iron and vitamin D/C helps. 2017-09-28 16:35:03

not specifically. if you know some triggers like cold water etc, avoid them and close contact with people who may be infected. 2017-09-28 16:36:11

hi Laxmi, if the episodes are mostly with fever then they are viral infections most likely. Increase his immunity by including more proteins/vitamin c etc in his diet...thats the most effective preventive measure. Read a blog on this on the parentune website...you may find it useful. if allergic, you may need to give him a longer term anti allergic. 2017-09-28 16:44:43

Hi sonia, a dry cough sounds hoarse while a mucusy or phlegmy one sounds 'rattly'as if he would need to spit out the mucous to clear the throat. Not all coughs would require antibiotics though...doe she snorei n the night or mouth breathe..?you may see anENT doctor if the episodes are that frequent and troublesome to look at the adenoids . 2017-09-28 16:50:32

hi vivek, this is vey commonly seen when they start school as they are now exposed to lot more bugs. not all such episodes need antibiotics anyway...for the milder ones, use home remedies. you will find some in the blog on the parentune website. Encourage healthy eating to keep the immunity strong. 2017-09-28 16:53:03

hi parul, it sounds allergy mediated. For blocked nose, use nasal saline drops at bedtime and sos as frequently as needed. If particularly troublesome, he may need an oral anti allergic at night. Keep the room temperature ambient, bed clothes dust free etc to minimise triggers. 2017-09-28 16:55:33

Hi my name is 6 month old. She has watery eyes. Doctor says it is due to blocked nose. He suggested nasal drop. I am giving it since her birth. But eyes are still watery. What to do? Please suggest. Till when this problem of eyes and nose persist?

Shipra Mathur
Hi Neha, the watery eyes are usually due to blocked nasolacrimal duct - a connection between the inner eye and nose. the treatment is a specific but easy massage of that area - please check again with your paediatrician or an eye specialist regarding this. it does tend to resolve as the duct opens with massage and time. 2017-09-28 16:02:45

Hi, the tonsils/adenoids may have regrown and sometimes need a repeat sustained treatment and review. nasal congestion is anyway common with allergies and cold. If its persistent , you may need to have it seen by ENT again; if minor and episodic, then treat at that time with steam inhalation and nasal drops. 2017-09-28 16:06:07

hi, its common to see that with adenoidal hypertrophy medical treatment...as the tissue may enlarge again in the face of persistent allergy /infection. Please have it reviewed by your ENT , may need Xray to decide furthur management...possible surgery if symptoms severe...otherwise mostly they resolve around 10 years of age or so. Take care 2017-09-28 16:11:59
