10 Diwali decoration ideas within budget

Diwali, the festival of lights is just around the corner and I simply can’t keep calm! It is my favorite festival not because of its significance or the reason why we celebrate it but majorly because I get to doll up my house once a year with all my heart and no one stops me. Be it lights, diyas, candles, flowers or rangolis, everything just adds up so much charm and happiness in every corner the eye can see.

Why Do We Decorate Our Homes on Diwali?

Diwali is a festival of lights and the entire house is brightly lit up with a combination of diyas, candles and lights. But before the decoration of the house begins, the homemakers and the other family members start cleaning their homes. Every nook and corner of the home is dusted and cleaned because-

  1. To welcome Goddess Lakshmi: It is believed that Goddess Laksmi grace only those homes that are thoroughly cleaned, and brightly decorated hence first the cleaning and then the practice of decorating our homes during Diwali
  2. Impromptu guests: Diwali is also the time when friends visit each other and wish each other dropping any time to wish Happy Diwali. Hence the homes are thoroughly cleaned and decorated so that it is ready to welcome impromptu guests as well
  3. New beginnings: In most of the communities in India the day after Diwali is celebrated as New Year and hence to mark a new beginning – the entire home is dusted, old things discarded and replaced with new things filling the place with new vigour, new life and thus a complete new beginning

How To Decorate Our Home Within Budget?

With Diwali celebrations comes the big question, how to decorate your home and that too within a budget. Well, today I am going to list down some of my favorite and easy to do ideas on Diwali decorations which are not only beautiful to the eye but also light on the pocket. So read on!

  1. Fairy Lights: They are the best thing that happened to the décor world. Honestly, there is nothing that a string of fairy lights cannot beautify.
    • Invest in lots of fairy lights and decorate your special places or items with them
    • You can put these lights on the doorway, deck up a beautiful wall mirror or spruce up an old art piece with it
    • The charm of these lights will add elegance and sophistication to your home within an instant and burn no holes in your pocket
    • The best part about them is that they are reusable and last pretty long, 3-4 years for sure
    • The only problem would be finding electrical sockets for them but nowadays you get battery operated lights as well, so no worries!
  2. Earthen Diyas: I strongly support the “Make in India” campaign so I would request you to buy lots and lots of earthen diyas from Indian artisans. Invest in some acrylic or poster paints and let your creativity out. Decorate the diyas in different ways by adding colour, glitter, mirrors, decorative ribbons etc. You can invite your family members and kids to help you out and it will become a wonderful family project full of joy
  3. Glass Lanterns: You can buy beautiful painted glass lanterns from the market and place diyas or candles inside to give a beautiful effect to your home. In case you want to make one at home, simply take an old glass bottle that has a wide neck to place the diya. Paint the body with glass paints and decorate the bottle with fabric paint tubes in golden or silver colors to add a royal look. It’s that simple!
  4. Flowers: It is almost impossible to complete a Diwali décor without flowers. The freshness and beauty of the fragrant flowers instantly uplifts the entire aura of the house. Bring in your favorite flowers from the market and decorate areas of your home like entrance door, windows, vases, curtains etc. When teamed up with gorgeous lighting, flowers add amazing effects to the décor
  5. Paper Decorations: These days a lot of origami, paper mache and paper folding decoration items are available in the market. If you have the time, you can even make these at home by using old newspapers and some decoration items like paints, glue, mirrors, glitters etc. Invest in paper Torans for the entrance of your home and paper origami wall hangings and wall decorations to add a festive look to the house
  6. Stencil Rangoli: These days you can easily get rangolis stencils and rangolis colors in the market which you can use to decorate areas of your house with. Start by decorating the entrance with a big sized rangolis pattern and continue decoration other areas like hallway or corners. You can even mix up rangolis color designs with flower designs and diyas to get better effects. All you need is some patience and love for creativity!
  7. Candles: These will not only add light to your home but also add beauty to the décor. This is because candles come in all shapes, colors, sizes and designs. You can even get floating candles and place them inside glass bowls filled with water and some rose petals. The effect that these candles will give your center table will be out of the world!
  8. Lamp Shades: Speaking of lights, lamp shades are a great addition to your home during Diwali time because lamp shades are pretty affordable and last long. They come in various designs and sizes which makes it easy for you to decorate several spaces in your home according to your wish. If you are good at drawing and doodling, you can even decorate your own lamp shade using sketch pens before placing a light source or bulb
  9. Clay art: These are one of the cheapest and easy to source items for decorating your home during Diwali. You can invest in different items like wall hangings, center pieces, trays, art pieces, artifacts, figurines etc. and put them around your house in several corners to add a rustic and Indian look
  10. Mason Jars: These are really in these days and are available very easily. Mason jars can be used to decorate your home during Diwali without worrying about budget. You can start by simply buying a few mason jars and some decoration items to deck them up. Once you have attained the desired look, you can place a light source within them like a tea light, fairy lights or candles. You will be surprised to see how beautiful the area with the mason jars will look!
There are thousands of ideas for decorating your home during Diwali but I have listed my top 10 for you that will be an instant hit among your friends and family without being heavy on your pocket. All you need to do is add some of your personal charm to these and bring out a characteristic look in your home. Pick a theme and start decorating!
