10 Reasons why pets are good for your child

Making a pet a part of your family has numerous benefits, besides being a playful, adorable and safe companion for your child. Our Proparent blogger Sugandha Tiwari talks about how a pet can contribute to your child’s overall emotional and psychological development in a positive way. Sugandha shares her own experience growing up with her pet dog, and how among other things this helped her understand the value of taking on the responsibility of caring for another being. She shares 10 more reasons for you to consider making a pet a part of your family, such as -

  1. How a pet can help your child feel appreciated and loved– more so if they are an only child
  2. What valuable life lessons your child would learn while caring for their pet – such as responsibility and accountability
  3. How pets can help your child develop emotionally and contribute to their general physical and psychological health
  4. How a pet can make your child feel wanted, express themselves and build trust

My son was an early reader who gained more confidence in reading at the age of 4 by reading to his pet bunny.. It may sound silly but he used to enjoy reading to his pet. I think he gained confidence in reading because animals are not judgemental and not going to find faults and correct them while reading with a flow. In fact some research also proves that reading to pet dog builds child's confidence in reading. Having a pet dog has helped my son become very empathetic to other beings. Some times He would bring home a stray kitten to lookafter and later give them up for adoption or would go look for the strays to feed them. I strongly believe that growing up with pets helps one to be more compassionate and sensitive to others' problems. I also feel that growing up with pets would build child's immunity. Btw Sugandha, loved this blog..
