Do you follow these practices

I take environment issues seriously. Be it office, home or public places. I feel that as mothers, parents and individual citizens, our everyday little efforts can make a difference to our environment.

Apart from using a solar cooker, I do simple things during my everyday activities to minimize my dependence on energy usage and reduce my carbon footprints. At our home, being environment-friendly is a “way of life”.

For instance, I have made it a practice at home to soak rice and lentils 2 hours before cooking time so that they cook with less fuel. I take things out of refrigerator a few hours before use so that they warm to room temperature without the use of fuel.

When ironing clothes at home, we switch off the iron before the last cloth is to be done, because we know the residual heat is enough to do a good job. These are just a few examples.

Over the weekend when I go for grocery shopping or to buy vegetables, I always carry a jute bag when going out and when the grocer offers to put their purchases in a polythene bag, I refuse to take it.

The cars my family use are checked regularly for emissions. Whenever possible, we prefer car pool to commute to office.

It is important for us to develop these everyday habits and take the eco-friendly messages seriously.

When it comes to using water, we make sure that the water is reused in every possible way. For example, the water sued for washing rice, lentils or vegetables is usually stored in a bucket and used to water the plants we have. Water used for washing clothes is used for cleaning the balcony or even cleaning the washrooms. Sometimes flushing too.

This environment day, let us all commit to follow eco-friendly practices daily.

Suggest more environment friendly tips if you follow at home. Lets all share with each other the good habits.

Hi Laura, You have conveyed the message wonderfully. It's must for all of us to use water with a conservative approach as it's depleting at a very fast rate ! Please do correct.... usage of waste soapy water used for washing clothes is harmful for flushing as it will kill the bacteria in the Septic Tank which is instrumental in breaking down the solid human waste or sludge. Hence never throw waste water mixed with soapy solution in the flush. Thanks and regards

Hi Laura, you have written it so beautifully. These things are really important as energy conservation and its proper usage will benefit the mankind in the long run. Its important to preserve the natural resources as well as make the best use of them so that the dependency on artificial or man made resources gets reduced as there are certain negative impacts of non natural resources. Nature has given us beautiful gifts which we all must cherish and return to it in a good way rather than polluting or wasting resources.

I agree that we should inculcate these habits early at home. one more thing that I do at home is to collect the RO water purifier discard (hard water) to water my plants and soak the dishes to be washed. it can even be used for flushing, cleaning the balconies and bathrooms.
