Why comparison is not good for your child

We all want our children to grow up being the best at whatever it is they do – whether it’s studies, sports, extracurricular activities, or even socialising! However, at times, our way of helping them achieve success can be deeply flawed – resulting in the opposite effect. Comparing your child to others is perhaps one of the worst practices you can adopt as a parent. Understanding that each child – including yours - is unique and special in their own capabilities and strengths is extremely important. One might be a good student, but the other might be great at sports, art and music – so what? Your children look to you for encouragement, acceptance and respect – and it is your duty to provide them with that. Our Proparent blogger Sugandha Tiwari helps us understand the dangers of comparing your child with others with some simple points.

  1. Comparing your child to others can cause deep, life-long trauma such as low self-esteem and low self-worth– which will affect everything they do in the future– whether it’stheir career or their relationships
  2. Comparison can create a casual attitude concerning making efforts towards achievement and success – which can be the opposite of what you aspire for
  3. Perhaps one of the most harmful effects of comparing your child to others is that it will ruin your relationship with them. Read on to find out more on why we must learn to accept and respect our child and never compare them to others

really a useful one! comparison between children /siblings can be really damaging and can have long term effects on childrens' mind .. it's not ethical on our part to compare two children as we need to understand each child is born with a different set of genes and is raised in a different environment. thank u so much for sharing this useful blog.
