World Environment Day
Created by Urvashi Shah Updated on Jun 05, 2018
As the month of June begins, it dawns up on us a very important event. 5th June is celebrated as World Environment Day on a global scale, which is more importantly the need of the hour today. With the growing dangers that man has been creating for our planet, a number of species of flora and fauna are going extinct, along with a rise in the global warming, signified by rising temperatures all over the world. With the careless use of resources by man, the world is getting hotter by every day and night. Thus, the United Nations chose this day to raise awareness and seek action for protection of our environment. Every year a particular theme is chosen and the theme for World Environment Day 2018 is beating plastic pollution.
The use of plastic has brought a global concern as the water bodies and the land are both affected on a large basis. Plastic is not easy to decompose, thus, lifting environmental concerns, which is why we celebrate World Environment Day, to shift our focus on to the future of our planet.
World Environment Day is hosted by different countries every year, where the official celebration takes place. The focus on the host country helps highlight the environmental challenges it faces, and supports the effort to address them. We are thus, proud to announce that this year the host country is none other than India. We will be focusing on the theme, which urges governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together and explore sustainable alternatives and urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic polluting our oceans, damaging marine life and threatening human health.
Why We Celebrate World Environment Day
World Environment Day started off as a celebration on 5th June 1973 in a bid to raise the global awareness about the importance of the healthy and green environment in the human lives, to solve the environmental dilemmas by implementing some positive environmental actions as well as to make aware common public worldwide that everyone is responsible for saving his/her environment and not only somebody, government or organizations working for it.
World environment day was first established to be celebrated every year by running some effective campaigns by the United Nations General Assembly and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the conference on Human Environment began from 5th to 16th of June at United Nations in 1972. It was first time celebrated in 1973 with the particular theme “Only one Earth”. Since 1974, the celebration campaign of the world environment day is hosted in different cities of the world. Here are some of the important objectives of World Environment Day-
- It is celebrated to make common public aware about the environmental concerns
- Encourage common people from different societies and communities to actively participate in the celebration as well as become an active agent in developing environmental safety measures
- Letting people know that community people are very essential to inhibit negative changes towards the environmental issues
- Encourage people to make their nearby surroundings safe and clean to enjoy safer, cleaner and more prosperous future
What To Do On World Environment Day
As a citizen of this planet, it is our duty to safeguard our planet from any further threats. So here are a few things you can take in to consideration to protect the planet.
Spread awareness:The major purpose of this theme is to start making changes right from our homes. You can spread awareness by talking to your children and family, your office members and even people living in your locality. The theme for this year can be spread actively by banning the use of plastic from our everyday lives. Whenever you head out for shopping, make sure you use cloth bags instead of plastic and urge the shopkeeper to make use of the same
Grow a garden:We hardly see any greenery in this concrete jungle, which is why, if you are lucky to have a backyard, make use of the same to grow a small garden. The terrace of your building can also be used to plant saplings or you can grow your own edibles. This will help you interact with nature and give you a chance to do something new
Use public transport:If you use public transportation majorly then kudos to you, you are already doing your bit for the planet. But if you are not using it, then pledge to use public transportation right from now, which will help you in reducing pollution. You can even take your bicycle to travel short distance, which will even contribute to your good health or simply walk the distance
The 5 R’s:Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Renew are the 5 R’s, which you need to take a note of this Environmental Day. You must have learnt this concept back in school, which is why you need to imply on it now and also pass on the teachings to your child for our planet’s brighter future
Publicise:These days whatever people do, they love to boast about it on social media. Whatever we eat, drink or do in our daily lives, we manage to update the details about the same on social media. So why not do something for our planet and put it up on your social media wall? You can also encourage your friends and family members to be a part of this tradition, which is sure a fun way to seek some enjoyment
Don’t just make this a Government initiative, but take the responsibility on yourselves to change the world towards a better tomorrow. Say ‘No’ to plastic and make use of other alternatives like a cloth bag whenever you go shopping. Make sure to segregate the waste before dumping, which make it easier for the civic workers to treat it. It is time to start implying all these environmental values you learnt in school to use it in your daily lives and pass on the same to your children for a greener and brighter earth. I am going to plant a little garden in my backyard today, thus, contributing towards the environment. What are you doing?
