The people of a particular country denote what is the tradition and culture of that place. Their behaviour and attitude show who are they and from where they have come from. It is important to preserve the culture of our country. One day of the year is set aside to celebrate the entire world’s culture. Awareness should be created to preserve the important cultural monuments and sites. This day is called World Heritage Day. Here’s how you can aware your child about this day-

International Day For Monuments And Sites

On 18 April 1982 on the occasion of a symposium organized by ICOMOS in Tunisia, the holding of the "International Day for Monuments and Sites" to be celebrated simultaneously throughout the world was suggested. This project was approved by the Executive Committee who provided practical suggestions to the National Committees on how to organize this day. The idea was also approved by the UNESCO General Conference who passed a resolution at its 22nd session in November 1983 recommending that Member States examine the possibility of declaring 18 April each year “International Monuments and Sites Day”. This has been traditionally called the World Heritage Day.

World Heritage Day In India

There are many ways in which you can celebrate this day with your child, regardless to the country. Until now there are 32 World Heritage sites in India which are recognized by UNESCO.

Some of the ways suggested by ICOMOS, which will help you and your child explore more about this day are -

  • Keep the entry free to monuments and sites with restoration works
  • Promote this day on various newspapers, magazines and radio broadcasts should also be done
  • Country should invite local and foreign experts for conferences and interviews
  • Exhibitions of photos and paintings are the best way to promote cultural heritage
  • Inaugurating a recent restored monument attracts more visitors and enhances the beauty of that place
  • Awarding prizes to organizations or persons who have made an outstanding contribution to the conservation and promotion of cultural heritage or produced an excellent publication on the subject
  • Activities should be conducted at school level to instil the respect for our heritage
