Hi all,   My 5 year old daughter has a fear of the dark! She gets really scared when asked to go out in the dark or to any room or washroom. Is it normal? I don't want to make her too dependent on me. Please share your inputs on this.   Thanks

Hi Swati, You need to recognize whether it is a normal state of fear that children have and grow out or is it a phobia? A phobia will require expert help. Symptoms of a phobia include: gasping for air, breaking into a sweat, becoming hysterical, freezing, unable to move etc. If the symptoms are like this in a dark room or washroom, please get counselling. But if it is a normal, child reactions, such as reaching out for you, calling you, then be there to support her and re-instate how everything is ok, she needn't be afraid of anything and mumma is always there for her. SHe is will outgrow this. hope this helps.

OMG she is just 5 years, obviously its very normal that they are scared of the dark, till 12 years i was scared of dark and i was asking the help of my parents to go to loo,for god sake its not phobia. Please be with her whenever she needs and slowly guide her to become independent.
