Hi Varsha, 1. Get familiarized with phonics and teach her to read through phonics. 2. Start with consonant sounds, then the long vowel sound, short vowel sound and the blends. 3. Simultaneously you can make her write the letter for the corresponding sounds. 4. But the best method to teach her to write is to start with letters with standing line, then move on to sleeping line, slanting line and then the letters with curves. 5. Simultaneously you can make her identify objects with a given starting sound. For example you can play 'I spy' to find any object whose name starts with a given alphabet, say 'B' 6. Once she is comfortable finding the beginning sound, now focus on ending sound. Make her identify objects that ends with a given alphabet. 7. Finally the middle sound. Children find it hard to identify Middle sounds. But be patient. 8. You can make her write her own inventive spelling by sounding out the word. In case if she writes Kool for cool, encourage her and no need to correct it. 9. Read aloud a lot of books everyday. 10. While reading point out under the words by moving the finger along the sentence. 11. Teach her how we read from left to right and from top to bottom. 12. Make her read books with simple words. I used Fountas and pinnell standards for my son when he was young and now I use Lexile standards as reference. Fountas and Pinnell is the standard that is used to categorise the books into different levels from A to Z based on many factors such as no of words, sentences, difficulty in Reading the word, complexity in literal comprehension and inferential comprehension etc. If you are not able to identify the reading levels, you can subscribe (or ask your child's school to subscribe) for the website Razkids where they have 100s of books categorized and you can track the progress. 13. Always use the right level book so that she doesn't get discouraged. 14. To teach writing, first make your child do simple drawings and ask questions about her drawings. The activity is to make her think. Write down the explanation below the drawing. 15. In the next stage, make her write captions for her drawing once she learns to write alphabets and phonics. Let her use her own inventive spelling for the captions. 16. Later stage make her draw and write 3 part story with beginning middle and an ending. The same story can be developed into paragraphs at the later stage. I have only highlighted few steps. If you need any guidance on a specific stage, please post it here. Will be happy to help..
