Hi my son s 2yr 4 months. I put him in play school 15 days back. My doubt s he doesn't Speak. He utters few words. But expresses all his needs by sign language. He asks for water n tells if he pees. Communicates with other children but doesn't utter proper words.. Is there a need to show to a speech therapist. My paed suggested me to put in playschool.

Hi Sharada! U have taken a great decision of getting her admitted in a play school. Gradually u would notice a change in her. Also at home, talk as much as possible with her. Ask her questions_ what she would like to have to eat, to play with. Don't give in to signs or single word answers. for example : if u want to know what she would like to have for dinner, ask her" what would u like to have now for dinner? Ask her to spell out and say in words clearly what she wants and help her complete the sentence. " Mummy i want to have dosa and sambhar for dinner ". So by elaborating one word answers and praising her for the same, u would be motivating her. Read out simple story books to her. Do puppet shows, take help of placards to ask what is this. Ask questions in the end. You could wait for few more months before consulting a therapist. Continue working on her and also talk to teachers at school and ask them to motivate her to speak. keep a tab on what's done in school and repeat it at home. Hope this helps!

Hi Again! My apologies for referring to your son as 'her'. My bad! Ask him to repeat what he is trying to say without loosing patience and without nagging, lest he gets upset and further withdraws. Make use of words that r appreciating and motivating him to speak up. Tkcare!
