Hi Arti . Criteria should be proximity and what kind of skills they help develop in child. As working parent i always prefer a preschool emphasizing on social skills.

for me, it is about learnign to be on their own, fending for themselves, the first time they are away from school

I think it is about learning life skills. with families becoming smaller, children don't know the value of relationships, sharing, taking care of things, waiting for their chance, giving things to someone etc. in a group setting they learn this.

I think overall development in extracurricular, making them more vocal about explaining what they want , making them expressive along with basic value building. Mix of all above would be ideal preschool for my child.

Children these days dont know how to behave in social gatherings. Imbibing right social skills is important at play school along with basic education.
