Self-esteem and obesity

7 to 11 years

Hi Proparents! I am a working mother of an 8 year old. My son used to be an active child till recently, but off late, he's suddenly become less active, has gained around 7 KGs in just 3-4 months, and as per weight, is now bordering to Obese. I feel this has started affecting him, as he avoids going out to play with friends, avoids social gatherings, and stays quieter now a days... which is very unlike him... Please suggest so as to how do I help my son ...Has anyone ofyoubeen in a similar situation? What worked for you?

Obesity leads to low self confidence in children. You can go for jogging or swimming together and also keep a check on his diet.

Hi Neha, if u feel that the weight has increased all of a sudden , u can consult an endocrinologist and check his thyroid levels. U can even consult ur paediatrician . If everything is normal, u can put him in yoga class or swimming class. It will definitely help.

Hi Neha! I agree with Meena and wud advise u that it will be a wise decision to go in for thyroid tests. Please look for other symptoms such as child feeling too cold, swelling on face and eyes, dry skin, brittle hair, constipation etc. also look for family history for such thyroid problems. Till the time test results are with u and u consult ur paediatrician please motivate ur child and spend more time with him, and u cud just tell him it is just a phase which will pass by. U cud take him to the park, market or wherever he likes and boost his morale. It is quite possible that he is being teased at school for sudden gain in weight. U cud share with him he need not get depressed. The more he will take them seriously the more they will tease him. But please do visit doc.
