Hi Ayesha, take his thumb out whenever he puts in , give him some finger food to eat like thin and long pieces of carrot, cucumber. Keep talking with him even if he doesnot replies back , show him some cartoons or rhymes.

Hi , i have heard about an ointment to be applied on the fingers, even safe for children below 1 year. Due to it's bad taste , children will take out their finger as soon as they suck it. I dont know if its applicable for you. If u Like to know about that ointment, i will refer with my sister and will let you know the name . Please do refer your pediatrician for further clarification.

Thanks for considering my suggestion Ayesha. It is FEMITE (Denatonium Benzoate Solution).

one more thing... After applying the ointment, take care that your child does not suck his fingers for the first 5 mts after which it will get dry. If you have any confusion about this, talk with a paediatrician.
