International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

With the world leading towards armed conflicts lately, it is the unguarded members of the society, that it, the children who are mostly affected in a number of ways. The six most common violations are recruitment and use of children in war, killing, sexual violence, abduction, attacks on schools and hospitals, and denial of humanitarian access. This day is more of a fortuity to recognize the sufferings of children all over the world, who are victims of aggression.

History Behind The International Day Of Innocent Children Victims Of Aggression

It was on 19th of August 1982, at its special emergency session, the members of the General Assembly of Palestine were largely appalled because of the large number of innocent Lebanese and Palestinian children being the victims of the aggression acts by the Israel’s. This is the major reason the Assembly decided to celebrate 4th of June as International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. The main objective of this day is to shed light on the sufferings of children on a global level who have been the victims of abuse, physically, emotionally or mentally. This day observes the commitment of the United Nations to safeguard children and their rights.

Why Day Of Innocent Children Victims Of Aggression Is Celebrated

Child abuse statistics is reaching on a higher level with every passing year, which has taken many by aghast. It comprises around 10 million child refuges that are taken care by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, around 2 million children in the past two decades being killed during the conflicts, and around 80000 children dying every year in Caribbean and Latin America region as a result of violence breaking out in their families. The main purpose of celebrating this day is to spread awareness on the sufferings and pain of children who are victims of abuse.

This day acknowledges the various organizations, including private individuals who are safeguarding the rights of children maltreated in various parts of the world. Most important thoughts behind the celebration of this day are as follows-

  • Acceptance of the embedded dignity and of the absolute and equal right of each and every member of the family is the basis of justice, peace and freedom in the world
  • Childhood is legitimate to special assistance and care
  • A child must be completely prepared to live a personal life in society, and nurtured in the spirit of the principles asserted in the Charter of the United Nations, and especially in the spirit of dignity, peace, freedom, tolerance, solidarity and equality
  • A child, for the harmonious and full development of his/her personality must grow up in an atmosphere of love, understanding and happiness, in a family environment
  • A child, in his mental and physical immaturity, requires special care and safeguards which also include proper legal protection, after birth and even before birth

How International Day Of Innocent Children Victims Of Aggression Is Celebrated In India

This day is celebrated on 4th June every year in India to acknowledge the sufferings of children all over the world who are victims of aggression. Various events are organized in child care organizations where debates are held on the protection of child rights. Children are made aware to lead their lives with dignity and respect and are taught about moral values, which are essential to their own development and growth. Various activities such as dancing, singing, painting competitions are organized.

When young children confront violence, the scars seem to remain etched in their memories forever. Children who have experienced abuse at an early age are 9 times more likely to get involved in criminal activities while also get abusive in their relationships. It is not just the Government’s, but even our duty to safeguard the rights of children, who can lead a harmonious life for their overall development and growth. So let us take up on this responsibility to help children lead a better life, who will then go on to become the future of this nation. This day provides the best platform to take your pledge in regards to protection of the children’s right and shield them from the horrors of abuse.
