Winter care for Babies

As the cold and freezing days of winter are approaching, your concern for your tiny baby’s health is likely to increase. You will receive much advice from your relatives and fellow parents on how to take care of your baby in winter, which may not really help you with the challenging responsibility, but rather, leave you with doubts! Babies are extremely fragile and as their immune system is in the developing stage, they are more likely to fall sick and be affected by seasonal changes, particularly during winter. The dropping temperature in winter increases the chances of your baby contracting infections and falling sick; which is why, as a parent, you have to be careful with regard to his health. Here is a simple guide on how you can take care of your baby in winter and keep him safe and warm.

▪️Breastfeed, Breast milk improves the baby’s immune strength & keeps colds and infections at bay. If your baby has crossed the six months mark, you can include warm liquids in his diet & breastfeed, too. It will provide him with additional nutrients, and keep him safe & warm during winter.

▪️Be careful and watch out for any signs of infections. Babies are more at risk of contracting infections during winter, given the fact that their immunity levels are low. If you notice your baby making wheezing sounds while sleeping, coughing severely, or having difficulty breathing, he may have contracted an infection. Take your baby to a doctor immediately.

▪️ Use a soft and light blanket. In the winter season, your natural instinct would be to cover your baby in layers and put a heavy blanket on him while making him sleep, but that may not be the best for your little one. While socks and mittens would keep him warm, a heavy blanket will not – it may suffocate him.

▪️When taking your baby outdoors wear proper warm clothes. Unless it is absolutely necessary, avoid exposing your child to the cold, harsh winds blowing outside.

▪️Bathe your baby infrequently, in the winter season. Use lukewarm water and maintain a balance between the bathroom’s and room’s temperature. After bathing, cover him in a towel and dress him without further delay. It’s best to give him a sponge bath in winter, and if the weather is too cold, it’s okay to skip it! In winter, you will have to be extra careful with regards to taking care of your baby; sometimes over-protective, too. But all is fine as long as your baby stays safe and warm.
