Yakoob, a food vendor from Hamirpur was sleeping outside the intensive care unit where his twin daughters were admitted due to some health issues. He and his wife Nazma took turns to watch their little girls.
A fierce fire broke out at the hospital on Friday Night and Yakoob made many desperate attempts to save his babies, however, he couldn’t reach his daughters as the fire raged. In a jiffy, he made the heart-wrenching decision to focus on saving the other innocent lives trapped inside. Without thinking twice, he broke through the window and rescued as many babies as he could, not even sparing a moment to mourn his own loss.
The fire claimed the lives of 10 infants while 16 sustained injuries. Sanjana Kumari was among those who had to leave the hospital without her baby. She shared, “My child burned to death in front of my eyes and I was helpless… The helper stood and watched. The negligence of the hospital destroyed my dreams. I hadn't even held my baby yet.”
Santoshi Devi’s baby was admitted to the NICU owing to some delivery-related complications. When the fire broke out, they couldn’t find the baby. "I heard screams but my child was gone," she shared.
