Know More About Tomato Flu That Leaves Children With Red Blisters

Recently, the doctors around the country have raised an alarm over a new illness that is spreading across the country. 'Tomato Flu', as it is commonly called, is a new type of hand, foot, and mouth disease and few cases have been reported across Kerala, and Odisha. As per the data gathered by the Lancet Respiratory Journal, the first ever case of Tomato flu was reported in Kollam in Kerala and has so far infected around 82 children. These kids were under the age of 5. It is a highly infectious disease that is caused by various types of intestinal viruses, and is rare in adults as they have a stronger immune system when compared to children. The infection is named as 'tomato flu' because of the red, and painful blisters that appears on the body of the patient and gradually increases to the size of a tomato.
What is Tomato Flu?
The flu got its name from the tomato-shaped blisters it causes on the body.
The flu causes rashes or blisters, skin irritation and dehydration. However, its cause is still unknown — whether it is related to chikungunya, a viral fever or a dengue fever.

What should one do if the child develops these symptoms?
If your child develops some of these symptoms, the first and foremost thing to do is consult a doctor immediately. The infected child must avoid scratching rashes or blisters. Proper hygiene should be maintained and make sure the child rests as much as possible.
How can you prevent yourself from getting infected?
One should not panic because the situation is not alarming, as yet. However, one must proceed with caution.
