In an interview with the Times of India, Munawar shared, “That situation still scares me. My son was just one and a half years old back then. He fell ill and for 2 to 3 days, there was no improvement in his condition. After taking him to the hospital, we discovered that he had Kawasaki disease. Three injections were needed to save his life and each cost around Rs 25,000. I needed Rs 75,000 but only had 700 to 800 in my wallet.”

Munawar further shared how he controlled his emotions and tried to stay composed in front of the doctors and even though he did not have the money, he smiled and reassured that he will arrange it. Once Munawar stepped out, he could no longer pretend and froze for 30 to 40 minutes straight. He was blank at that moment. Munawar described it as the hardest moment of his life.

Munawar tried talking to several people for help and finally his former employer lent him the money. “I travelled to Mumbai Central, collected the money and got back within 3 hours. Even though I had the money, I could not smile because deep down I knew it wasn’t mine.” he recalled.

    What Is Kawasaki Disease?

Kawasaki disease is a serious condition in which the person’s blood vessels become inflamed or swollen. Without timely treatment, the condition can progress and damage the heart leading to life-threatening complications as the affected vessels can rupture or tear, disrupting the flow of blood to the heart.

Common symptoms of Kawasaki disease include:

    • Fever that lasts for 5 days or more

    • red/pink eyes

    • Belly pain and upset stomach

    • Irritation and crankiness

    • Red or cracked lips

    • Swollen hands and feet

    • Peeling of skin

    • Rashes on the trunk

If a child is presenting with any of these symptoms, it is important to seek immediate medical help.
