Navratri 2018 is here, and one look around is enough to tell, how eager we are to welcome the season of festivities. The word 'Navratri' translates into 'nine nights' in Sanskrit. Here, I am sharing navrati special foods recipes which you can enjoy during these 9 days with your family & childrens.

Easy To Make Navrati Special Food Ideas

#1 Sabudana Khichdi Recipe

                                 Sabudana Khichdi
Ingredients Quantity
Sabudana 1 Bowl (Soaked for 3 hours)
Cumin curry leaves As per Taste
Potatoes 2
Green Chili As per Taste
Salt (Sendha namak) As per Taste
Garam masala As per Taste
Coriander leaves As per Taste
Chopped ginger As per Taste
Peanut (roasted and grinded) As per Need
Lemon juice As per Taste

How to Prepare: Method

  1. Heat oil in a pan Add cumin, hing & curry leaves
  2. When they crackle, add chopped potatoes and saute for 2 minutes Now, add chopped tomatoes &; green chilli and cook well for few minutes
  3. Then add salt, turmeric, chilli powder, garam masala, sugar and coriander and mix well again Take out sabudana from water and mix it in the pan
  4. Add peanut powder ( you can use half split peanut too) & chopped ginger
  5. Mix everything slowly & cook for 3 minutes. Add lemon juice in it Garnish with coriander

Delicious khichdi is ready. Enjoy it

#2 Sweet Potato Kheer Recipe

                                Sweet Potato Kheer
Ingredients Quantity
Grated Sweet Potato 1 Cup
Milk 2 Cup
Sugar 3 Tbsp
Ghee 2 Tbsp
Chopped Cashews & Almonds for Garnishing 1/4 Tbsp
Cardamom Powder (Elaichi)  2-3
Saffron Strands As per taste

How to Prepare: Method

  1. Wash, peel and grate sweet potatoes
  2. Heat ghee in a pan, Roast the cashews and almonds in ghee. Fry till little brown and remove them in bowl and set aside
  3. To same ghee add grated sweet potato and fry for 2-3 minutes
  4. Then add milk and let it boil on low flame for about 10 minutes until the milk thickens. Stirring constantly
  5. Add sugar and cook for 3-4 minutes on low flame
  6. Add cardamom powder and mix well. Garnish with roasted nuts. Serve hot or cold

#3 Sabudana Kheer Recipe

                                     Sabudana Kheer
             Ingredients  Quantity
Sabudana (tapioca pearl) ¼ Cup
Milk 2 Cup
Sugar 2-3
Ghee 2 Tbsp
Cardamom Powder 1 Pinch

How to Prepare: Method

  1. Soak the sabudana in enough water to cover it for 3-4hours. Drain excess water from it
  2. Heat milk in a pan on medium flame. When milk starts boiling add soaked sabudana. Add sugar and cook for about 10 minutes till its dissolved well and sabudana looks transparent
  3. Add a pinch of cardamom powder if desired. Garnish with nuts. Serve hot or cold

#4 Crispy Aalo Recipe

                                           Crispy Aalo
 Ingredients    Quantity
Potatoes, Peeled 2
Red Chilli Powder 1 Tsp
Roasted Cumin Powder 1 Tsp
Salt As per Taste
Oil for frying As per Taste

Preparation Method: 

1. Wash and peel the potatoes. Parboil the potatoes in pressure cooker.
2. Take one whistle in pressure cooker. Once potatoes become warm. Dice them in cubes.
3. Heat oil in a pan, deep fry or shallow fry the diced potatoes till crispy and golden. Remove them on an absorbent paper to remove excess oil from it.
4. Sprinkle red chilli powder, cumin powder and salt immediately after removing on absorbent paper. Serve hot.

Note: Use rock salt or sendha namak instead of regular salt while fasting

#5 Makhana Kheer Recipe

                                        Makhana Kheer
          Ingredients   Quantity
Milk 1 Litre
Makhana (puffed lotus seeds) 1/4 Cups
Sugar 2 Tsp
Pistachios chopped 2 Tsp
Almonds chopped 2 Tsp
Green Cardamom Powder (optional) 1 Tsp

Prepration Method:

  1. In a deep vessel, pour in the milk, break the makhanas into smaller pieces, add them to the milk and let it simmer for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours without covering, till the milk boils down and the seeds are soft
  2. Add the sugar and stir for a few minutes
  3. Add the pistachios, almonds and cardamom powder, stir well again. Serve hot or cold, as you like

#6 Banana Walnut Lassi Recipe

                                  Banana Walnut Lassi
Ingredients Quantity
 Low fat yogurt 1 Cup
Banana ½
Walnuts (or include Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, almonds and pine nuts) 3-4
Seeds (mix of flax seeds and sesame seeds) 1 Tsp
Honey 1-2 Tsp

Preparation Method:

  1. In a food processor, pour yoghurt, whey powder, flax seed, sesame seeds, walnuts, honey and bananas
  2. Blend it well till smooth and creamy
  3. Transfer into a glass and garnish with chopped walnuts before serving

#7 Vratwala Chawal Dhokla Recipe

                                Vratwala Chawal Dhokla
         Ingredients Quantity
Samwat ke chawal ¾ Cups
Sour yogurt 1 Cup
Ginger paste To taste 1 Tsp
Green chillies paste As per Taste
Sendha namak (rock salt) 1 Tsp
Oil/ghee 1 Tsp
Dry Red Peppers 2 Whole
Curry leaves 6-7
Cumin seeds 1 Tsp
Coconut and fresh coriander, grated, for garnish As per Taste

Preparation Method:

  1. Roast the rice in a pan very lightly and do not let it brown. Prepare the batter by mixing rice, rock salt, chilli paste, ginger paste and yogurt
  2. Leave the mixture to ferment overnight. It should become a bit spongy
  3. Grease a tin with little ghee and transfer the batter into it
  4. Place the tin into the steamer and let cook for 20 minutes
  5. Test if it is done and then let it cool

#8 Kela-Kabab Recipe

Kela-Kabab
Ingredients Quantity
Raw bananas (diced), peeled 250 Gram
Black cardamom seed (badi elaichi ) 1
Kuttu ka atta 1/4 Cup
White rock salt 2 Tsp
Coriander Seeds (powdered), roasted 2 Tsp
Chilli Powder 1/2 Tsp
Lemon juice 2 Tsp
Green chili, chopped 1
Coriander, chopped 2 Tbsp
Desi ghee  

Preparation Method:

  1. Steam the bananas, ginger and elaichi, till bananas are cooked, but bite like
  2. Alternately cook with as little water as possible, so that there is no water left after the bananas are cooked. Leave to cool
  3. Once on a normal temperature, mash the bananas; add the rest of the ingredients and mix well to form dough like consistency
  4. Shape into small cylindrical rods and dust with the kuttu ka atta
  5. Heat a thin layer of ghee and fry the kebabs over medium heat, till brown on both sides

#9 Kuttu Ka Dosa Recipe

Kuttu Ka Dosa
Ingredients Quantity
Potatoes, boiled, for filling 3
Salt (use sendha namak if fasting)  
Red chilli powder ½ Tsp
Ginger, Chopped ½ Tsp
For Dosa:
Buckwheat flour (kuttu) 5 Tbsp
Arbi (colocasia), boiled 2 Tbsp
Ajwain (carom seeds) ½ Tsp
Red chilli powder ½ Tsp
Ginger 1 Tsp
Green chillies, chopped 1 Tsp
Ghee (clarified butter)  

How to Prepare: Method:

  1. Prepare the Potato filling: Heat ghee in a pan, crush the potatoes into it and mix in the rest of the ingredients. Toss the potato mixture around for a few minutes till it becomes light brown in colour. Take it out and keep aside
  2. Prepare the Dosa: In a bowl, mash the arbi and mix it with the flour and salt. Add some water and mix well
  3. Add the ajwain, red chilli powder, ginger and green chillies and mix again. Keep adding water and stirring in one direction till the batter turns into a smooth flowing consistency
  4. Heat a flat pan, dab a bit of ghee on it, pour a ladle of the batter and spread it. Cook for a few minutes and spread more ghee around the edges to make it crisp
  5. Now flip it over and cook the other side. Now put some filling on top and fold the dosa over it
  6. Serve hot with mint and coconut chutney
