Swami Vivekananda was a great personality who inspired forward thinking in millions of youth. The phrase simple living high thinking was apt for him. Even in 21st century, we are battling with the issues like betterment of women and society and stressed on spirituality and spiritualism, which he spoke about in his lifetime. Some of the major issues that the current society is still battling with including ever-increasing poverty rate, and struggle to make the ends meet, were the issues that Swamiji had raised in his lifetime.

Scroll down to read some of Swamiji's views on different aspects of society that ring true even today.

How Relevant Are Swami Vivekananda's Teachings in 21st Century?

The simple answer to this question, will be quite relevant. Swamiji in his lifetime spoke about the issues like-

  1. Liberate the minority section: Liberating the minority section of the society so that the society can grow towards spiritualism. The class/creed/caste-based violence should be avoided and not be tolerated, if there needs to be any progress in the country
  2. Education is compulsory: He believed that lack of education is the root cause of all the problems and he was not wrong. Unfortunately, it holds true even today. Though there are numerous efforts being made to make education compulsory, we still have a long way to go
  3. Women emancipation: Swami Vivekananda believed that women are the pillar of the society, so if they are strong, the society will stand strong. He also focused on imparting education to women and training them in martial arts for their own protection. Even today women in the society are struggling for their rights and their place in the society. But that still doesn't exist today where a number of girls are denied their rights to basic education and a number of villages still practising female foeticide and female infanticide
  4. Respect for all religions: He believed that all religions are equal and have similar teachings. People today don't fight for religious issues; no religion speaks ill of the other. It is the followers who tend to bring religion in focus to target the others. We have been witnesses to a number of riots happening in the name of religion with no conclusion to any of them. He believed that religion is not the root cause of all the fights, because no religion teaches intolerance. In fact, every religion teaches peace, harmony and prosperity in the world

Swami Vivekananda, was a great spiritual leader and thinker. His philosophies and teachings were all for the betterment of the society and since we are still struggling to become a peaceful society even in 21st century, I would say that Swami Vivekananda's teachings and lessons are still as relevant today as they were in the times when he first propagated them.

In present day scenario political parties are using religion to divide and rule people.. Swami Vivekananda's teaching are quite relevant in such circumstances. if people are made aware of the agenda of these political leaders and teachings of such great leaders are spread among the masses and they remain united , the mission of these political leaders would fail..
