A Heartbreaking Gift: Dehradun Parents Donate Their 2-Day-Old Daughter's Body
Story behind it

“I lost my daughter before I could feel her properly. By donating her body, I am making her ‘immortal’. She will serve a greater cause for mankind which we couldn't do,”

These were the words of Nancy, a grieving mother who lost her daughter even before she could name her. This is a real-life story of short-lived happiness and lifelong generosity.

Nancy and her husband waited for months to hold their baby in their arms but when the time came, the happiness did not last long. They lost their child only 60 hours after her birth but what they did next made her immortal for the parents. They donated their newborn’s body for the purpose of medical education and research, making her the youngest body donor in India.

    Short-Lived Happiness

Ram Mahra and Nancy hail from Purushottam Nagar village in Haridwar district. The couple got married 4 years ago and were eagerly waiting to welcome their second child this year. On December 8, their daughter was born via C-section at Doon Medical College Hospital in Dehradun, but, unfortunately, the baby was diagnosed with a serious heart condition that claimed her life in just 60 hours, despite all efforts.

"The girl was admitted due to a heart condition. Despite all efforts, she could not survive.” shared Dr Anurag Agwarwal, Medical Superintendent, at Doon Hospital

    Making The Decision

The decision was not easy as the couple was still trying to come to terms with the fact that their daughter is no more. They were made aware of the option of body donation and how it was going to help many more babies. Although they were a little hesitant at first, after encouragement from the Mohan Foundation and Dadhichi Dehdaan Samiti, they decided to make the donation.

“When the doctor got to know about my daughter’s death, he asked if we wanted to donate her body for medical education purposes. Initially, we were hesitant but then, my wife and I decided to go ahead with it,” said Ram Mahra

    Why This Contribution Matters

This contribution matters not only because it reflects the selflessness of two grieving parents, but also because of the larger impact that it would create. This might be perhaps the youngest such case in the country. Earlier, the body of a one-week-old infant was donated to AIIMS Delhi.

"Body donation is invaluable for MBBS students and various medical departments. It provides essential support for understanding human anatomy and advancing medical knowledge. The role of both committees in facilitating this donation is commendable." explained  Dr Anurag Agwarwal

Emphasizing how this decision will set an example, he further added, "This extraordinary decision showcases the importance of body donation in supporting medical research and education. It sets an example for others to contribute to society in similar ways,"

Saraswati spent just two days in this world, but she will continue to live in our hearts for years. To honour the couple’s selfless and noble act, Doon Medical College presented them with a plant.
