What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus, transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. This disease is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, and its incidence tends to increase during the rainy season when mosquito breeding is at its peak. India has a tropical Climate and the Dengue virus is on a rise especially during the rainy season.

Symptoms Of Dengue Fever

Dengue fever can affect people of all ages, but children are more susceptible due to their weaker immune systems. The symptoms vary from mild to severe, and early recognition becomes important for timely medical intervention, especially in case of children. The symptoms of Dengue fever include:

1. High fever (often reaching 104°F or 40°C)

2. Severe headache

3. Pain behind the eyes

4. Joint and muscle pain

5. Nausea and vomiting

6. Fatigue

7. Skin rash/es

Distinguishing Dengue from Other Illnesses

The symptoms of dengue fever can sometimes be mistaken for other viral infections like the flu or even COVID-19. If your child exhibits any of the aforementioned symptoms, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional for accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.

Given the after effects of Dengue, it’s better to take timely and proactive preventive measures.

Here is what you can do.

1. Eliminate Mosquito Breeding Sites: Aedes mosquitoes breed in stagnant water, so ensure there are no areas of pooled water in and around your home. Clean and empty water containers like buckets, flower pots, and pet bowls regularly.

2. Use Mosquito Nets: Aedes mosquitoes, the carriers of the Dengue virus are most active in the day and so use mosquito nets during the day too to provide an additional layer of protection.

3. Protective Clothing: Dress your child in light-colored, long-sleeved shirts, and pants to reduce exposed skin that the mosquitoes can bite.

4. Insect Repellents: Use child-friendly mosquito repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin and clothing. Always follow the instructions and guidelines provided on the packaging.

5. Window and Door Screens: Install screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes from entering your home.

6. Stay Indoors During Peak Mosquito Activity: Aedes mosquitoes are most active during early morning and late afternoon. Try to keep your child indoors during these times.

When To Seek Medical Attention

If your child shows any symptoms of Dengue fever, seek medical attention promptly. Early diagnosis and appropriate medical care can significantly reduce the severity and complications associated with the disease.

Preventing Dengue Spread

Apart from protecting your child, it's equally important to prevent the spread of dengue in your community. Advocate for proper waste disposal and community efforts to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. It would be advisable that you reach out to your condominium associations/RWA/Housing society committees and take proactive measures before and during the rainy season.

Dengue fever can be a serious health concern, especially for children. As a parent, being aware of the risks and taking necessary and proactive measures can make a significant difference in safeguarding your child's health. By staying informed and following preventive measures, we can collectively work towards reducing the incidence of Dengue and creating a healthier and safer environment for our little ones. Let's join hands to protect our children from this preventable disease and ensure a brighter and healthier future for them.
