A 10-year-old girl from Lavon, Texas, became a hero when she saved her little brother from choking. Her quick thinking and bravery stopped a serious accident and showed how even young kids can save lives.
What Happened
Leah James, who is 10, and her 7-year-old brother, Logan, were playing on their backyard trampoline. They were doing a sour candy challenge, which is a game where you eat very sour candy to see who can handle it the longest.
While playing, Logan accidentally choked on a piece of candy. He grabbed his throat and could not breathe. It was a scary moment as both are kids and choking is something which can turn out to be very dangerous.
Leah did not panic. She remembered what she had learned about first aid from a babysitting guide and from her mom. She quickly gave Logan back blows and abdominal thrusts, also called the Heimlich maneuver. Within seconds, the candy came out and Logan could breathe again.

Why First Aid is Important
Leah’s quick action shows why it is important to know basic first aid. When someone chokes, their airway can be blocked. The brain needs oxygen to work. If not acted immediately, serious damage can happen in just a few minutes.
Leah’s mom, Heather James, said she was very proud of her daughter. “I was in the kitchen and heard Logan struggling. By the time I reached the backyard, Leah had already saved him,” she said.
The Community Praised Leah
The Lavon Police Department shared a video of Leah saving her brother. People all over the country saw the video and called Leah a hero. Many praised her for staying calm and acting quickly in a scary situation.
Local authorities plan to honor Leah for her courage. Her story also reminds parents that teaching kids first aid can really save lives.
