Things are changing in Mizoram. Fathers are getting involved equally in nurturing and taking care of children. It has always been the mothers who handled most of the day-to-day care, while fathers focused on earning money. But now, fathers are stepping in to help with feeding and nurturing their young children.
Men in Action
The Bilkhawthlir and Thingsulthliah ICDS projects are leading the way. They have started programs that involve fathers in Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) activities. Men are encouraged to feed their children and monitor their nutrition. Basically, shared parenting is the motto here.

Breaking Old Habits
For many people, it used to feel unusual to see fathers cooking or feeding children. These projects are changing that. When men take part in child care, it shows the community that raising children is everyone’s job. Fathers who join these programs are setting an example for others.
When fathers are involved, their support helps children grow stronger and healthier.
Community Support
Local leaders, health workers, and organizations in Mizoram are helping fathers get involved. Workshops and awareness programs teach fathers what to do and how to help. This also strengthens families, as both parents share responsibilities more equally.
Overcoming Challenges
Change does not happen overnight. Especially in a society where men and women have always had separate roles. Some men are still hesitant to take part because of old customs or fear of judgment. But continuous awareness programs, positive stories from fathers already participating, are helping overcome these barriers. Slowly, more fathers are stepping forward.
A Step Toward Equality
These initiatives do more than improve child care. They also help create equality at home. Fathers learn that parenting is not just the mother’s job.
Also, for older children around, they have always seen just the mother going around taking the child’s nutritional responsibility. When they see this, it is passing on a positive message to the next generation.
