His Mother Ate From The Same Plate For 24 Years — He Discovered The Emotional Reason After Her Death
Story behind it

Not all parents say “I am proud of you” or write long letters. Some say it in a way you can’t even imagine. And sometimes you won’t even notice, until much later.

This is the story of Vikram S Buddhanesan and a simple plate.

Yes, a simple plate on which his mom had been eating food for 20 long years. And surprisingly, Vikram never questioned her about it. It was known as “Amma’s plate”. She liked it. That’s all he knew.

It was only after she passed away that his sister shared the real story.

What was so special about that plate?

It was a prize Vikram had won in 7th grade, back in 1999. She never told him, but for almost two decades, she used it every day. Sometimes her son and daughter were allowed to use it.

For her, it wasn’t just a plate. It was a symbol of her son’s achievement. A memory she chose to keep close in her everyday life, and not on a shelf. She never boasted about it, just silently cherished it. And that’s what makes the story so powerful.

When Vikram found out about it, it was too late to pay back the love. He shared the story on X (Twitter), “This is Amma’s plate. She had eaten from this plate for the past two decades... After her demise, I came to know through my sister that this plate was a prize I won.” These two lines were enough to make people emotional and relate to his world.

Next time you visit home, don’t let things go unnoticed.

  • Look at that old thali your mom won’t let go of.

  • Notice that shirt your dad still wears to bed.

  • Ask the story behind the mug, the spoon, and the faded photo.

You might discover something you never expected.

If Your Parents Are Around...

Sit with them and, most importantly, listen to them. They have their small stories, which hold a lifetime of love.

And if your parents are no longer here, maybe find that one thing they cherished.
Hold it and remember them. Feel their quiet love again.
