Some stories are so amazing that they sound almost unbelievable and this one is definitely one of them! Twins in the United States were born in 2022, but what makes his story special is that they were actually conceived 30 years ago. Yes, that was long before his parents even knew each other.

These little babies’ journey to life began three decades earlier, when their embryo was created and frozen in the early 1990s. Their parents, Philip and Rachel Ridgeway, were just toddlers back then. They never could have imagined that years later, they would become the mom and dad of twins who had been waiting in a freezer for 30 years!

How It All Happened

Philip and Rachel always dreamed of having children, but they wanted to do something meaningful when they started their family. They learned about embryo adoption. It is a process where families can adopt embryos that were created for other couples through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) but were never used.

When they found out that some of these embryos had been frozen for decades, they were amazed. The couple felt that every embryo deserved a chance at life, no matter how long it had been frozen. So, they decided to adopt one of the oldest frozen embryos available. This embryo was created in April 1992.

Doctors carefully transferred it into Rachel’s womb. Miraculously, it worked. And Rachel gave birth to healthy twins.

The Science Behind IVF

In vitro fertilization is a medical process where eggs and sperm are combined in a lab to create embryos. These embryos can then be placed into a woman’s uterus to help her get pregnant. Some embryos are frozen for future use. Usually it is frozen for a few months or years.

In this case, the embryo stayed frozen for three decades. It is one of the longest-frozen embryos ever successfully born. Thanks to modern science, the freezing process preserves embryos so well that they can remain viable for decades.

When scientists first began freezing embryos in the 1980s and 1990s, no one knew how long they could safely be stored. But this baby’s birth proves that even after 30 years, life can still be successfully brought into the world.

For Philip and Rachel, this was a miracle. The Ridgeways said they hope their story inspires others to consider this path. “We didn’t set out to make history,” Philip explained. “We just wanted to do something meaningful and we’re thankful every day for our babies.”

Embryo Adoption

Embryo adoption is still not very common, but it is becoming more known around the world. It gives frozen embryos a chance to be born.

For families who want to have children but can’t conceive naturally, embryo adoption can be a beautiful way to build a family.
