Mumbai’s Republic Day celebrations are usually filled with pride, flags, parades, songs, and festive energy. But this year, what was meant to be a day of joy turned into a heartbreaking tragedy in Mumbai’s Vikhroli neighbourhood, when a three‑year‑old girl was struck by falling loudspeakers and later collapsed from her injuries.

What Happened During the Celebration?

On Republic Day, in the Ambedkar Nagar area of Tagore Nagar in Vikhroli East, loudspeakers had been set up on the roadside to play patriotic songs and amplify the celebration atmosphere.

According to CCTV footage shared on social media, a man carrying a bundle of rugs accidentally entangled his load in the wiring of the loudspeakers. This caused the heavy speakers to become unstable and topple suddenly.

The speakers fell directly onto the young girl, critically injuring her. People nearby were seen reacting in shock as a boy picked up the injured child and ran towards her for help.

Who Was the Child?

The girl has been identified as Janhavi Sonkar, a three‑year‑old resident of the area. She was at play near her home when the loudspeakers collapsed. Her family had lived in the neighbourhood for years, and her father had recently shared that she had just secured admission to a CBSE school and was looking forward to starting classes soon.

Janhavi was rushed to local hospitals for treatment, but was declared dead due to the severity of her injuries.

What Has the Police Said?

The Vikhroli police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with causing death by negligence.

Two people have been named in the FIR - Vinod Harji Parmar, the organiser responsible for setting up the speakers and Sayyad Guran (or Sayyad Guran Ali), whose bundle of clothes is believed to have triggered the accident by catching on the speaker wiring.

Police are continuing the investigation into the incident.

Allegations of Negligence and Safety Concerns

Local residents have claimed that the speakers were installed without proper safety precautions on a narrow road where children often played. They said warnings were ignored despite earlier complaints about the setup posing a risk.

There are also allegations that a nearby medical facility refused immediate treatment when the injured child was first brought in, which some family members believe may have reduced her chances of survival. Hospital staff later said they lacked facilities to handle such a serious case.

This incident raises important questions about public safety during community events:

·       Are temporary installations being set up with professional support?

·       Are safety checks done before large gatherings or loud equipment is installed?

·       How prepared are organisers and nearby medical centres for emergencies?

Public celebrations should be joyous, but greater attention to risk prevention is essential, especially where children are involved.

Janhavi’s loss is a reminder of how fragile life can be and how important it is to protect and safeguard children during public events.
