Six blood transfusions. Three months in the NICU. One tiny fighter. This is the story of how Malti Marie, daughter of Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, defied the odds from her very first day.

An Early Arrival: What Happened at Birth

Malti was born via surrogate three months before her expected due date in April 2022. She weighed just 1 pound 11 ounces which is smaller than many newborns’ hands. He also mentioned that she was purple at birth, which was a sign that her tiny body wasn’t fully prepared for the world outside the womb. The medical team had to resuscitate her immediately and provide urgent intensive care.

Because Malti’s lungs and organs were not fully developed, she required immediate and complex medical intervention.

What Is Premature Birth?

A premature birth occurs when a baby is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. It can happen for a variety of reasons - sometimes unexplained, sometimes due to maternal health conditions, infections, or complications with the placenta or cervix.

Premature infants are at higher risk of:

  • Respiratory distress due to underdeveloped lungs
  • Temperature instability
  • Immune system challenges
  • Feeding and digestion problems
  • Anemia or low blood counts

The earlier a baby is born, the greater the potential for complications. That’s why many preterm infants require care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Three and a Half Months in the NICU

Malti’s first three and a half months of life were spent in the NICU, a unit designed for babies who need round‑the‑clock monitoring and support. Nick Jonas explained that due to COVID‑19 restrictions, he and Priyanka Chopra Jonas alternated 12‑hour shifts at the hospital so one parent could be with Malti at all times. Every day was emotionally intense for the couple.

During her NICU stay, Malti required six blood transfusions which is a higher number than typical but not unusual for very preterm infants. Premature babies often have low blood counts because their bodies haven’t had time to develop stable production of red blood cells, and they may also lose blood due to frequent testing and medical procedures.

Blood transfusions helps raise haemoglobin levels and improve oxygen delivery to tissues. They also support growth and energy levels and reduce the risk of complications from anaemia.

NICU teams follow careful guidelines when deciding on transfusions, balancing the benefits against risks such as infection or transfusion‑related reactions.

The Power of Resilience and Family Strength

Despite the difficult beginning, Malti fought every day, slowly gaining weight and strength. After weeks of intensive care, medical support, her condition improved enough for her to finally go home with her parents.

Nick Jonas reflected on how fortunate they were to see their daughter recover. Today, Malti is growing up healthy, bringing joy and magic to her parents’ lives.

What Parents of Preterm Babies Should Know

  • Premature birth is common and not always preventable. Many preterm infants go on to live healthy lives with appropriate medical care.
  • NICU stays can be long and emotional. Parents often experience a mix of stress and hope as they support their babies.
  • Blood transfusions are a tool, not a setback. They are often used to help preterm infants stabilize and grow stronger.
  • Every preterm baby grows at their own pace. Developmental milestones may come later, and that’s okay. Doctors track corrected age to measure progress more accurately.
  • Feeding challenges are common. Many preemies struggle with feeding at first. Tube feeding or special nutrition helps build strength over time.
  • Parents may feel helpless but your presence matters. Even when you can’t hold your baby, your voice, touch, and presence provide comfort and stability.

Malti’s journey is a beacon of hope for families everywhere, showing that with care and love, even the most fragile beginnings can lead to the brightest futures.

Because sometimes, the smallest fighters leave the biggest mark on our hearts.
