Birthing - delivery
safety

A shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district has raised serious concerns about maternal healthcare and emergency medical practices in India.

A routine transfer to a hospital turned into a tragedy that cost a baby’s life.

What Happened

Seven months pregnant Prema Devi suddenly went into labour on Monday. She was being taken to a Community Health Centre in an ambulance. In the ambulance she started experiencing intense pain.

She got pain in seven months and situations like this require careful handling and the presence of trained doctors. But what happened in the ambulance was very unprofessional and risky.

According to her husband Neeraj Kumar, a female health worker who is an ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) worker was present in the ambulance. She decided to handle the delivery herself instead of waiting to reach the hospital.

She gave Prema Devi a painkiller injection and attempted to carry out a normal delivery inside the ambulance. And all this was happening without any specialist in the ambulance.

A Tragic Situation

During the delivery, something went terribly wrong. The baby’s body came out, but the head remained stuck inside the mother’s womb. Due to this, the baby’s body got separated, while the head remained inside.

This could be the most horrifying situation that a mother and an unborn child would have gone through. There was panic and confusion inside the ambulance. Nobody was in a position to understand what just happened.

Soon, the healthcare workers realized the seriousness of the case and rushed her to a nearby private hospital. But the situation had become very complex and there was a high risk for any hospital to undertake that case. They were then referred to the District Medical College in Kaili.

Emergency Treatment and Surgery

At the medical college, doctors immediately carried out an ultrasound and other tests to understand the situation.

Doctors then performed an emergency surgery to remove the baby’s head from the mother’s body. The operation was done on priority to save her life.

Prema Devi is safe now and is undergoing treatment.

But being safe does not erase the trauma of losing a child. Losing a child in such a painful way leaves an emotional impact. And such impacts take a long time to heal.

After the incident, a case was filed against the ASHA worker and other healthcare workers who were present in the ambulance.

However, no strict action has been taken far. In such situations, quick and fair action is important to prevent similar incidents in future.

A Bigger Problem in the System

This incident also highlights deeper issues in the healthcare system, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

ASHA workers play a very important role in supporting pregnant women. But they are not trained to perform complicated medical procedures. This was a high-risk delivery.

This incident raises a question - Why was such a risky case attempted without a doctor?

Healthcare is not just about ambulances and hospitals. It is also about having trained professionals who know to follow the right medical procedures during such emergency cases.

Every life matters, and no family should ever go through such a situation.
