Toddlers have a habit of waking up at midnight and looking for their parents. And waking up by toddler at 4.30 in the morning can be exhausting at times, as parents usually have a long day and need rest.

But in the case of Kayla and Nathan Dahl, that morning disturbance by their toddler was life-saving. It was the reason their family is alive today.

A Normal Night That Turned Dangerous

The family had recently been recovering from COVID-19.

Like many people who go through this illness, both Kayla and Nathan had lost their sense of taste and smell. It is just one of the aftereffects of getting the virus.

But that night, it became something much more serious. As they slept peacefully in their home in Texas, a fire started in their living room. But due to loss of smell, they could not sense it.

The fire began from a gas heater in the living room. Slowly, the flames began to grow and started to fill the house. But inside the bedrooms, everything was normal. Even the smoke detectors did not respond. The house was burning and the entire family was asleep.

The Only One Awake

In the middle of all this danger, one person woke up and that was their 2-year-old son, Brandon.

He was too young to fully understand what was wrong. But somehow, he knew something was wrong. He was in the same room where the fire started.

At that age, we would expect him to panic and cry. But he showed bravery. No one knows how he managed it, but he came out of that room and ran towards his parent's bedroom.

The Two Words That Saved Everyone

When Brandon reached his parent’s room, he went to his mother and tapped her foot. He coughed a little, but the mom was in a deep sleep. She didn’t react to his actions. Then he just said two words - “Momma, hot.”

At first, Kayla was only half awake. She thought maybe her son was just feeling warm. But when she was fully awake, she turned toward the bedroom door to realise what had actually happened. All she could see was the flames. The fire had already spread more than they could have imagined. There was no time to waste. Kayla and Nathan quickly gathered their 5 children and ran out of the house as fast as they could. They were safe but within a few moments, the house was completely on fire.

“It’s nothing short of a miracle,” Nathan later said. “We had seconds.”

The fire destroyed their home. Everything had gone. Their cars and their belongings were all reduced to ashes.

But the good thing was they all were safe.

Their Little Hero

A 2-year-old boy saved an entire family with his awareness.

“He saved our entire family. He’s our little mini hero.” Kayla said.

We often think children don’t understand much. We assume they are too young to notice important things.

Sometimes, we even ignore what they say, thinking it’s just random talk. But this story changes our thoughts about what children think.

They notice more than we think and can sometimes act faster than adults.

So we can say, not all heroes wear a uniform. Some are just two years old and can save lives with just two words - “Momma, hot.”
