Midday Meal Disaster in Telangana: 22 Students Hospitalised After School Lunch

Safety at School

An incident in Telangana has once again brought attention to food safety in India’s school midday meal programme. On January 30, 2026, at least 22 students from a government primary school in Venkatapur village, Narayankhed mandal, Sangareddy district, fell ill shortly after consuming their midday meal.

According to officials, the children were served sambar and rice during lunch. Within a short time, many began complaining of stomach pain, discomfort, and vomiting. The affected students were immediately taken to a nearby government hospital for treatment. Police and school authorities later confirmed that all the students were stable and expected to be discharged soon after receiving medical care.

What Happened

Reports say that the midday meal had been prepared off-site at a supplier’s residence rather than in the school kitchen, as the school’s cooking shed is still incomplete. The food served on Thursday may have been cooked earlier and reheated, raising concerns about its freshness and safety.

Parents who rushed to the hospital were understandably alarmed and demanded strict action against those responsible, alleging negligence in food preparation and supervision. Local officials, including district education officers and police, have begun investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Official Response and Follow-Up

In response to the incident, authorities have taken steps to strengthen oversight of the midday meal programme at the school. The cook involved in preparing and serving the food has been removed, and show-cause notices have been issued to the headmaster for a lack of proper supervision. Efforts are reportedly underway to ensure that food is prepared on the school premises once the kitchen shed is ready.

The Telangana State Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has also taken notice of the case and directed the District Collector of Sangareddy to submit a detailed report by February 24, 2026.

Broader Concerns Over Food Safety in Schools

This is not a single incident. Across Telangana and other parts of India, there have been multiple cases where children have fallen ill after consuming midday meals. This included instances where students experienced vomiting, abdominal pain, or suspected food poisoning.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenge of ensuring food safety and quality control in school meal programmes that serve millions of children, especially in rural and under-resourced areas. While midday meals are vital for combating hunger and supporting education, proper hygiene remains essential to protect children’s health.

Going ahead, officials promise stronger monitoring, better infrastructure, and stricter compliance with safety standards. But for parents, the key question remains - How can we ensure that such a meal, which is meant to nourish the children, never becomes a health risk again?
